A Columbia Falls man died Wednesday morning after the vehicle he was a passenger in crashed off an embankment on Halfmoon Road.

The 53-year-old man died at the scene of the accident. A 34-year-old Kalispell man driving the Subaru Impreza was taken to Logan Health Medical Center with injuries.

According to a Montana Highway Patrol report, the crash occurred at the Halfmoon Road and Braig Road area near Columbia Falls. Alcohol and speed are listed as suspected factors.

The vehicle was northbound on Halfmoon Road when the driver failed to make a right-hand curve. The vehicle crossed the center line, ran over railroad tracks and went off the road into a deep embankment, striking small trees and landing at the bottom.

Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing a seatbelt. The vehicle’s airbags did deploy.

Road conditions were listed as dry.
