Superior opens playoffs with convincing win at Forsyth

If you could choose a time to peak in the world of sports, as in reach the peak, not take a peek, just before playoff time would be a great time.
So it is with the Superior Bobcats Class B-8 (Player) football team.
They swamped Mission in the final game of the regular season and earned a fourth seed in the now underway state playoffs.
As a result, Superior traveled to Forsyth, whom they eliminated from the playoffs last year 52-6 in Superior, and made it two in a row against the Doggies with a convincing 54-20 win this year, Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore wide receiver/running back Phin Cataldo caught two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Bobcats into the second round of the 2023 playoffs, where they will face the now 7-2 Fort Benton Longhorns this coming Saturday (Nov 4) in Fort Benton.
The Longhorns slipped past Lone Peak 36-33 Saturday to keep their playoff ambitions alive.
Superior, meanwhile, improved to 6-4 on the year with the win over the Doggies. It was their third straight win after a .500 start to the year.
Cataldo put the Cats on the scoreboard first in what was a high-scoring opening quarter when he hauled in a 14-yard pass from 6-5 freshman quarterback Landon Richards. Senior quarterback Jaxson Green, who has been on a scoring rampage the second half of the season, added the two-point after touchdown (PAT) conversion, giving Superior a quick 8-0 lead.
Forsyth, however, answered that score a short time later when quarterback Casey Pinkerton ran for a four-yard TD. The PAT attempt was no good, leaving Superior ahead, 8-6.
Bobcats senior running back Lucas Kovalsky boosted the Superior lead midway through the first quarter when he broke loose on a 59-yard scoring run which, with the addition of another Green PAT run, gave the visitors a 16-6 lead.
Pinkerton answered that score later in the opening period when he capped a Forsyth drive with his second touchdown run of the game, this time from five yards out. The extra point try failed.
Before the first quarter ended, Green broke out of the backfield and romped 32 yards for a touchdown, then added another two-point PAT to lift the Bobcats to a 24-12 lead as the quarter came to an end.
Pinkerton and the Doggies began the second quarter scoring when he hooked up with teammate Toby Barta on a 17 yard passing TD. Pinkerton added the two-point PAT run to make the score 24-20, Superior.
The Superior defense put points on the board a short time later when they produced a two-point safety to make the score 26-20.
On the next Bobcats possession, Cataldo snared his second pass receiving TD of the game, a 19-yard play from senior Chase Woodson. The PAT try failed, but the Cats had upped their advantage to 32-20 at halftime, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Woodson added to the Bobcats lead in the third quarter when he bulled into the Forsyth end zone from five yards out, putting Superior ahead 38-20. The PAT was no good.
Before the third quarter ended, Cataldo scored his third TD of the game, cashing in a Superior drive with a two-yard plunge for six points. The Cats tacked on a two-point conversion, boosting their lead to 46-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
Green capped game scoring in the fourth quarter when he broke free on an 18-yard touchdown jaunt that, with a successful PAT pass, gave the Cats their winning margin, 54-20.
Game time this Saturday in Fort Benton is set for 1 p.m.
