SMELTERVILLE — Plans are currently in motion for Utah-based company Maverik to break ground and start building on the 4.3-acre parcel on the northwest corner of Airport Road and Commerce Drive.

The Smelterville site cost $2,161,000 to procure from Shoshone County and will mean the addition of a new fuel and convenience store location, local jobs and what residents hope brings gas price competition in the Silver Valley.

The location will be the 72nd Maverik store in operation in Idaho and the company’s current plan is to open the site by late summer or early fall in 2024, but no official opening date has been announced.

“Maverik has officially closed on the Smelterville site, is permitted and hopes to break ground this year with the building starting to go vertical in the spring,” Maverik communications representative Michelle Monson said.

Monson said “Maverik is always looking to enter and consider expanding in areas where customers have unmet needs for fueling, great food and adventure. We’re excited about our growth in Idaho and look forward to exploring additional opportunities to serve even more Idaho customers.”

Plans for the location include a nearly 6,000-square-foot store, which will represent one of Maverik’s larger formats. The Smelterville location will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The theme planned for the site is panoramic landscape photos of the outdoors in Idaho and topographic maps on the store’s walls and adventure imagery throughout the property. Amenities planned for the store include truck and RV lanes and outside picnic tables.

Currently, Maverik has more than 400 locations across 12 Western states.

Maverik plans to open a new gas station and convenience store in the third quarter of 2024 in Smelterville. The 4.3-acre parcel is located on the northwest corner of Airport Road and Commerce Drive.

About 30 citizens turned out to the City Council meeting Tuesday night, many in support of the Jinny and Lloyd Wayne Dorsey, who own property on a Kootenai County island, but hit a snag when it came to building a home where their doublewide once stood on 12th Avenue. “It’s not too often we get a crowd like this,” Mayor Ron Jacobson said. “Thank you for taking the time to show up and show your support.”
