PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lakeland holds off Lewiston in opener

LEWISTON — Junior Landree Simon had 16 points and six rebounds as the Lakeland Hawks beat the Lewiston Bengals 55-53 in the Hawks' nonleague season opener on Tuesday at Lewiston High.

Senior Lila Kiefer had nine points, all on 3-pointers in the first half for Lakeland, which finished 6 of 14 from the 3-point line.

“It got close at the end of the third quarter,” said Lakeland assistant coach Caelyn Caufield, whose team led 30-17 at halftime before the Bengals cut the deficit to 42-35 after the third. “They kept creeping in, but we played good team defense. We made a few errors in the fourth quarter, but were able to keep it together and take care of the ball late in the game.”

Lakeland hosts Timberlake on Thursday.

Bay Delich and Reece DeGroot scored 13 points each for Lewiston (1-2), which hosts Lake City next Tuesday.

SPIRIT LAKE — In the Tigers' effort to find the right teammate, junior Diana Nelson was the beneficiary for her team.

Nelson scored 12 of her 19 points in the first half for the Tigers in a season-opening win over the Jaguars.

“Her teammates did a great job of getting her the ball in the right position,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said of Nelson. “We spread the ball around and the person that was in the position got the look. We did a good job of making the right player to the open player.”

Senior Kurtsten McKellips, a transfer from Lake City, had seven of her 17 points in the first quarter for the Tigers.

Timberlake travels to Lakeland on Thursday.

Senior Katie Yount had seven points for Genesis Prep, which hosts Clark Fork on Thursday at The Courts in Post Falls.

ST. MARIES — Junior Brenna Elliott scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the third quarter as the Lumberjacks rallied past the Knights of Moscow in the nonleague opener for both schools.

“The girls just went out and got after it in the second half,” St. Maries coach Gary Krumheuer said. “We just sped the game up and did a much better job of taking care of the ball in the second half.”

Senior Sami Sindt had eight points, nine rebounds and four steals for St. Maries, which travels to Wallace on Thursday.
