PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Coeur d'Alene gets going late in opener

MERIDIAN — Leading 24-23 at halftime, Coeur d’Alene turned to what got them to the top of the 5A ranks last season.
“We went into halftime, took 10 deep breaths, relaxed and just came back out and took care of the ball,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons, whose team outscored host Owyhee 34-21 in the second half of a 60-44 win on Wednesday night. “We just didn’t play so frantic. Owyhee played hard and were doubling on our ball screens and were just throwing everything at us in the first half. We still don’t really know what our identity is yet. We’re the defending state champs, but we’re not the same team.”
Teagan Colvin, a senior point guard who signed with UNLV last week, scored a game-high 25 points for the Vikings.
“When we were struggling, she’d go down and hit a shot when we needed her to or get to the rim,” Symons said. “She’s coming off being really, really sick and not at 100%. But her, Brookslee (Colvin) and Maddie (Mitchell) did a good job tipping the ball and keeping Owyhee unsettled on offense.”
Mitchell had eight points for Coeur d’Alene, which plays at Mountain View tonight.
Junior Riley Beck scored 15 points for Owyhee, which hosts Post Falls tonight.
