PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Late run sends Boise over Coeur d'Alene in state 5A semifinal rematch

BOISE — Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons knew that the challenge of three games in three days was going to be a tough one.

Throw in a hungry team at home on the final night, and it was a little too much to overcome.

Coeur d’Alene, behind 15 points from junior Teagan Colvin, fell to the Boise Brave 53-43 on Friday. Coeur d’Alene beat Boise 51-50 in overtime in the state 5A semifinals in February en route to the state title at the Ford Idaho Center.

“We battled,” Symons said. “We knew this was going to be a tough game and they’ve been waiting for this since last February. They return everyone and knew it was going to be tough. But it’s OK. We’re still building and have a lot of work to do.”

Colvin hit a 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining to cut the Boise lead to 41-40. Junior guard Allison Turcke hit back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 47-40.

“They hit some shots and played with some energy,” Symons said. “I’m pleased with how we played, but we also need to trust each other with the ball. But we’ll work on it and we’ll be ready to go.”

Senior guard Maddie Mitchell scored 10 points for Coeur d’Alene (2-1), which hosts Meridian on Nov. 30.

Senior Avery Howell, who signed with USC last week, had 18 points for Boise (4-1), which hosts Post Falls today.

MERIDIAN — Once the Timberwolves pressed back, they took more than the momentum from the host Storm.

Senior Sophia Zufelt scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Timberwolves outscored the Storm 23-5 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

“We shifted into a full-court press and they got a little flustered,” said first-year Lake City coach David Pratt, whose team trailed 40-25 after three quarters. “Owyhee is a really good team. They’re long, athletic and quick. Our girls just had to stay in the moment and they showed it tonight.”

Kaliah Frazey and Sadie Zimmerman scored eight points each for Lake City, which plays at Mountain View today.

Mikale Roy scored 15 points for Owyhee (1-2).

MERIDIAN — Brooklyn Brennan scored 19 points for the Trojans, but a 29-point effort from junior Kendrie Judd gave the Mavericks the victory.

“We did a lot better and we're progressing with a lot of good things happening tonight,” Post Falls coach Brian Hall said. “It would have been great to get that ‘W’, but we beat ourselves with some missed shots.”

Letti Asper scored 14 points for Post Falls (0-2), which concludes its road trip at Boise today.

Judd hit seven 3-pointers, five in the first half for Mountain View (1-3), which hosts Lake City today.

Danica Kelly had seven assists and four steals, Chelsey Cate 10 rebounds and four blocked shots for North Idaho Christian, which faces Helena Christian in the semifinals today.
