PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Post Falls outlasts Lakeland in OT

RATHDRUM — Myckenzie Mitley hit four 3-pointers, two in overtime, and Brooklynn Brennan hit two big baskets in the extra period and finished with 21 points as the visiting Post Falls Trojans outlasted the Lakeland Hawks 83-76 in a wild Inland Empire League girls basketball opener Tuesday night at Hawk Court.

“The girls never gave up,” Post Falls coach Brian Hall said. “They ran the floor well, probably the best rebounding game we’ve had this season.”

Mitley finished with 16 points for Post Falls (1-3). 

Landree Simon scored 28 points for Lakeland (1-2), including a 10-foot turnaround jumper at the end of regulation to force overtime. 

That came moments after Brennan drove through pressure for a layup to give the Trojans a two-point lead.

“It was an exciting basketball game,” Lakeland coach Tyrel Derrick said. Post Falls (36 of 62 from the field) “shot the crap out of the ball tonight.”

Kinlee McLean hit four of Post Falls’ 10 3-pointers, and finished with 17 points. Brennan had 11 assists for a double-double, and Letti Asper had 12 points and nine rebounds.

With Post Falls clinging to a two-point lead in OT, Olivia Hollenbeck took a charge to help the Trojans keep their lead. 

“It was a barnburner; it was a great game,” Hall said. “The girls played well together, and they found out when they play together, they can do a lot together.”

Payton Sterling hit seven of Lakeland’s 10 3-pointers, and finished with 23 points for the Hawks. Lila Kiefer had 10 points and 16 rebounds, Karstyn Kiefer eight points and eight assists.

Post Falls returns to action next Tuesday at Central Valley.

Lakeland is back at it Dec. 2 at West Valley.

LEWISTON — Senior Avery Waddington led a balanced attack with 13 points for the Timberwolves, who opened Inland Empire League play with a win over the Bengals at Lewiston High.

Senior Kaliah Frazey had 12 points, senior Kamryn Pickford and Sophia Zufelt 11 each for Lake City (4-0), which hosts Eagle on Nov. 30.

“We shared the ball well, which is one of our strengths,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “They did a good job of finding the players in the right spot. Four players in double-figures is always a good thing.”

Reese DeGroot scored 14 points for Lewiston (1-3).

POTLATCH — Brenna Elliott scored 11 points for the Lumberjacks, who were outscored 23-13 in the first half of a nonleague loss to the Loggers at Potlatch High.

“We came out with no energy at all,” St. Maries coach Gary Krumheuer said. “Potlatch got to every loose ball, and we were caught watching. We played with a lot more energy in the second half.”

Raevyn Yearout had six steals for St. Maries (1-2), which hosts Wallace on Tuesday.
