HAUSER — For nearly 40 years, the Hauser Fire Department has held an annual event to help families in the throes of childhood cancer while remembering a little cancer warrior gone too soon.

"Shalena's my daughter," Hauser Lake Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Gary Mobbs said Tuesday. "I'm just proud of everybody for keeping it going, and look at all the children we’ve helped through the years."

The 37th annual Shalena's Breakfast with Santa will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Hauser Lake Fire Station, 10728 E. Hauser Lake Road, Hauser.

Shalena Mobbs was only 2 when she was diagnosed with cancer in 1985, which shortly thereafter claimed her young life. Her memory is celebrated through the Breakfast with Santa event, the proceeds from which support other local families going through the same heartache the Mobbs family endured.

This year's event will support 4-year-old Tommy Spradley of Hayden, who has been diagnosed with leukemia.

"In the long run, it’s pretty cool to give this to a family of a child with cancer," Mobbs said.

Shalena's Breakfast with Santa is a time for community members to connect with one another and spread holiday spirit. Hauser Lake Fire volunteers will have 12 grills fired up to serve eggs, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy and more. Raffles will also be held.

Suggested donations are $3 per person or $15 per family.

The Hauser Lake Volunteer Fire Department will also conduct at two-night Candy Cane Run with Santa and Mrs. Claus the evenings of Dec. 15 and 16 to collect canned food for the Hauser Lake Food Pantry. The fire truck will make stops at Hollister Hills, the Cliff House, Julia and Woodlake, D-Mac's and Embers the first night. The second night includes stops at Westside, Waterford Estates, Sheltered Court, Love Court, Summit Loop, Nine Bark, Cloverleaf and Kathleen, Palomar and Tamboti, Aquifer and Southview Terrace.

Forty-eight hours and $300. That's all that stood between Army veteran Joseph Vosahlo and a stable home. “I was about $300 shy on moving into a new apartment after living in my van basically all of winter,” Vosahlo, 29, said Thursday.

Some trees become matchsticks, musical instruments or furniture. Others are turned into paper and used to make books filled with extraordinary tales of adventure. A few select trees become space travelers and have exciting stories of their own. One such NASA Moon Tree was planted Monday afternoon at Coeur d'Alene High School.
