On Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023, Jean Smart went to be with her late husband, Harold, in the presence of their Lord Jesus.

Jean was born Sept. 6, 1926 in Edmonton, Alberta.  After earning a nursing degree at the University of Alberta, she traveled to Detroit on a fellowship, where she met her future husband. Married on July 4, 1952, they spent 40 years in Michigan teaching at Brookside School Cranbrook, where she was the school nurse. In the summers they traveled to Montana, where they ran Lost Trail Camp at a beautiful hot spring on the edge of the Bitterroot wilderness. Jean was the camp nurse and made lifelong friendships.

In 1991 they retired to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to be close to their three sons. They built a home and became involved in their new community. Jean had an impact on people everywhere and was always ready for a good laugh or to tell a story.  Her deep love for Harold and their strong shared faith was always at the heart of their family and friendships.

They were fortunate to be able to travel to Europe and loved seeing new places, particularly the mountains. Jean was especially fond of their trip to Scotland, where they visited family and once again made new friends.

In retirement, Jean became a Master Gardener. She and Harold also made and delivered meals once a week to Habitat for Humanity. They saw it as a way to share Jesus’ love with others.

Jean is survived by sons Graeme (Sarah), Cameron (Ellen), and David (Julie), six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Her family thanks the staff at The Garden at Orchard Ridge for their loving care for Jean. It was there she kept making friends to the end.
