LEWISTON — Post Falls had planned all week to stay grounded at Lewiston to open 5A Inland Empire League play.

Then, during warmups, the air opened up a little if need be.

Still, the Trojans stuck to the plan as senior Tevin Burns rushed for three touchdowns in a 42-21 win over the Lewiston Bengals in the league opener for both on Friday at Bengal Field.

Junior Devin Burton ran for two scores for Post Falls (5-2), which led 21-7 at halftime and 42-14 late in the fourth quarter.

“Tevin is an excellent runner and Devin might have had his best night yet,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. “Having them both fresh was really important for us to be successful tonight.”

Junior quarterback Isaac McKeown, who was injured on the first drive and sat out the rest of last Friday’s game against Mt. Spokane, returned and threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Asher Bowie with 5:53 remaining in the fourth.

“We didn’t know if Isaac was going to play,” Bennett said. “We had a plan all week of how to use our other two quarterbacks (including senior Caden Smith, who replaced McKeown last week). But Isaac looked good enough to go and he played well.”

Post Falls beat Lewiston 42-35 in last year’s league opener.

“Lewiston’s a good team and well coached,” Bennett said. “I thought they did a good job and put some pressure on our offense. Our defense came up with some big stops and offensively we got things going in the third and fourth quarter.”

Post Falls travels to Coeur d'Alene next Friday.

Lewiston (3-4) travels to Lake City next Friday.
