PREP GOLF: Sandpoint girls third at state; Mire finishes 4th overall

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 8, 2023 1:00 AM
MOSCOW - The Sandpoint girls golf team took home bronze from the 4A State Championship held Friday and Saturday at the University of Idaho Golf Course. Junior Taylor Mire finished in fourth place to lead the Bulldogs to another state trophy.
"All five of our girls finished in the upper half," head coach Mike Deprez said. "... We will use all the resources available to help accomplish our goal of another trophy [in 2024]. This is a great team with five great girls."
Mire shot an 82 in round one and a 79 in round two to secure medalist honors. All other Sandpoint golfers placed in the top 25: Alexa Tuinstra (13th), Claire Loutzenhiser (17th), Raegan Samuels (22nd), and Demi Driggs (24th).
Not lost in all of this was lone boys qualifier Micah Young who shot a 91 and 89 to take 37th place at the state championship. Young, just a sophomore and having already qualified for state twice, will help set the tone for the boys team next year.
"I want to thank all the parents who made the drive down, our athletic director TJ Clary, and assistant coach Erin Roos," Deprez said. "Erin (Roos) handles so much on the mental side of things to help the girls prepare for the emotional roller coaster that is tournament golf."
The Sandpoint golf teams will surely continue to hit the driving range and the putting greens before winter rolls in.
