RATHDRUM — Vibrant fall colors painted the backdrop to the brats and beers being served in Rathdrum City Park on Saturday.

The city’s first Oktoberfest organized by the Rathdrum Chamber of Commerce included activities for kids and a rubber ducky race.

“We’re pretty pleased,” chamber Executive Director Ashley Cameron said.

Families listened to the German American Society Spokane Choir, dressed in dirndls, while they ate and enjoyed the warm weather.

The finale was a colorful ducky dash through a creek.

Northern Lakes firefighters dumped two truckloads of water into the creek to rush over 300 ducks downstream. Each duck had a number on the bottom and was racing for first place, as onlookers chased them from the shore.

The crowd shouted with excitement as yellow duck No. 161 crossed the finish line first, winning its owner a prize.
