POST FALLS — Coeur d’Alene Charter freshman Elliot Engles thought his moment had passed him by in the first overtime of a 3A District 1-2 semifinal match at The Fields at Real Life on Tuesday.

But, as sports go, he got another opportunity a few moments later.

Engles buried a shot in the fifth round of the penalty kick shootout to lift the second-seeded Panthers over the third-seeded Timberlake Tigers 4-2 in the shootout, clinching a berth for Cd'A Charter to the state tournament starting next Thursday at Vallivue High in Caldwell.

Engles had a breakaway into an open net in the first overtime, but his shot sailed wide.

“He kind of stumbled on his kick,” second-year Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “We told him in between the first and second overtime that he was going to get another chance. When he stepped up in the shootout, he was as calm as a cucumber.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter (11-4-3) faces top-seeded Bonners Ferry (13-3-1) in the championship game tonight at 8.

Bonners Ferry also clinched a berth to state with a 4-1 win over fifth-seeded Orofino (7-5-3) earlier on Tuesday.

Senior Austin Wilson had 17 saves for Timberlake, which finished 8-7-3.

“Austin did a great job of controlling the middle of the field,” Daigle said. “He was great in goal for them tonight.”

Senior Grant Allaway and junior Tyler Engelson scored in the shootout for the Tigers.

Junior Owen Sharp, freshman Stefan Pawlik and sophomore Lucas Witherwax also scored in the shootout for Coeur d’Alene Charter.

POST FALLS — Senior forward Alexa Sheppard scored six goals for the top-seeded Panthers in a shutout of the fourth-seeded Spartans in a semifinal match in the 3A District 1-2 tournament at The Fields at Real Life Ministries.

“We struggled to connect passes, but just kept working,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Priest River also did a great job of catching us offside. That condensed the field and really made us work to move in small spaces. Once we started working through the outsides, we were able to open things up a little more for some through balls and challenging the keeper from different angles.”

Junior midfielder Agnes Nordstedt had a goal and two assists for Coeur d’Alene Charter (14-1), which faces third-seeded Bonners Ferry (10-6) in the championship game tonight at 6 at The Fields.
