Make that coaching victory number 101.

After winning his 100th career game as head coach of the Hot Springs Savage Heat football team last week, Jim Lawson added to the total as the Heat blasted visiting Lima 64-6 Friday night in a Montana Western 6-player conference game.

Standout junior running back/linebacker Johnny Waterbury had a pair of first quarter interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns, as the Heat jumped out to a 46-6 lead during the first 10 minutes of play.

Teammate Quincy Styles-DePoe also had a “pick six” interception return for a touchdown in the opening quarter as the defense led the way against the Bears.

Waterbury put Hot Springs on the scoreboard first when he intercepted a Lima pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The point after touchdown (PAT) was no good, leaving the home team with a 6-0 lead.

The Savage Heat added to that lead a short time later when junior tight end David Chapman bulled into the end zone from three yards out, pushing the Hot Springs’ lead to 12-0. DePoe kicked the extra point, which in six-player football is worth two points, and early on the Heat were ahead 14-0.

On the next Bears’ possession, DePoe intercepted a Lima pass and sprinted 23 yards for another Heat score. He once again kicked the PAT, upping the Heat lead to 22-0.

On the next Hot Springs series, Weston Slonaker scored on an eight-yard run, and the Heat lead grew to 30-0 when Waterbury had a successful PAT kick.

The Hot Springs defense held Lima out of the end zone on the Bears’ next time with the ball, and one play later Heat junior quarterback Nick McAllister broke loose on a 28 yard TD scamper. Another DePoe PAT kick put Hot Springs up 38-0 and invoked the Mercy rule, which keeps the clock running non-stop except for called timeouts, injuries and changes of possession.

With time running low in the action-packed first quarter, Waterbury snatched his second interception of the game, and returned this one 38 yards for six points. The DePoe kick gave Hot Springs a 46-0 lead.

As the clock ticked off the final seconds of the first quarter, Lima finally got on the scoreboard when Garet Lessley broke through the Heat defense and ran 25 yards for a TD. The PAT attempt failed and as the opening quarter came to an end, Hot Springs had a 46-6 advantage.

At that point, the Savage Heat starters had run only six plays from scrimmage.

With reserves getting plenty of valuable varsity playing time the rest of the way, Hot Springs’ defense continued to throttle the Bears offense. In the meanwhile, sophomore running back/wide receiver Brighton Keller hauled in a 10 yard scoring pass from freshman backup quarterback Ben Aldridge. The PAT try was not good, leaving the Heat with a 52-6 lead that held up through the rest of the first half.

Neither team scored in the third quarter.

In the game’s final 10 minutes of play, freshman Daniel Slonaker pulled in a 14-yard TD toss from Aldridge. Later in the final quarter, Aldridge wrapped up the game scoring with a two-yard touchdown plunge. Neither PAT try was good, but Hot Springs wrapped up the 64-6 victory, running their record to 6-0 on the year and in the conference.

The Savage Heat close out their regular season with two road games, beginning with a trip to Twin Bridges this Friday.

They then travel to Sanders County rival Noxon Friday, October 21, for a crucial league showdown with the Red Devils.
