I’ve spent most of my life in northeastern Washington and graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2021. After that, I spent roughly two years working for a small online newspaper in North Seattle before realizing big city living wasn’t for me. Me and my pup, Kodak, headed east, where we eventually landed in Sandpoint. When I’m not writing, you can find me spending time exercising and taking photos. I ran two half marathons in high school and after spending the past few years recovering from various injuries, I’m hoping to complete my first full marathon by the end of the year. I also love any outdoor activity, none of which would be complete without my dog. Kodak and I love going for walks and hikes, and I can’t wait to try to convince him to get in my kayak and spend the hot months of the year on Lake Pend Oreille. While he’s not a fan of baths, he sure does love chasing the ducks. | October 12, 2023 1:00 AM

A 36-year-old Florida woman was arrested late last month after police alleged she attempted to steal multiple items from Super 1 Foods in Sandpoint.

On Sept. 22, Sandpoint Police officers received a call from the loss prevention employee at Super 1 who told officers they had witnessed a woman shoving various items into her pockets. When police arrived, court records contend they watched surveillance footage that showed the woman allegedly placing items into a fanny pack she was wearing at the time. The loss prevention employee said the store would like to press charges.

Officers asked the woman to go into the loss prevention office with them, and court records said she originally agreed.

“Prior to reaching the office, the female stated she was not going into a room alone with two white men,” one officer wrote in the probable cause affidavit.

At this point, court records said the woman allegedly opened the fanny pack and offered the items to officers, saying, “Here.” The woman then allegedly began to leave, but was told by officers she was not free to go. However, court records contend the woman continued to attempt to leave, allegedly throwing the items in the trash and walking toward the exit.

Officers continued to attempt to stop her and asked for her name, to which she allegedly replied, “I don’t know,” court records said. She also allegedly told officers she did not have her identification on her. When told she would be arrested if she didn’t identify herself, the woman allegedly told officers she wasn’t going to be arrested for “nothing,” and tried to again pull away from officers attempting to detain her.

“Additional officers were required to forcefully place her in handcuffs,” an officer wrote in the probable cause affidavit.

The woman was eventually identified as Rheindie Richemond by the Florida identification card found on the woman. She was arrested on charges of willful concealment of goods as well as resisting/obstructing officers. Court records contend that on the way to jail, Richemond allegedly made several statements requesting to pay for the items she attempted to steal.

Richemond was required to pay a $300 bond and her arraignment date has been set for Oct. 13.
