EAGLE — Lake City senior Gavin Schoener picked a great time for his first varsity goal.
Schoener, a defender, scored the lone goal in the 71st minute on an assist from junior Jacob Molina to send the fifth-seeded Timberwolves past the seventh-seeded Patriots of Boise 1-0 in the state 5A consolation championship game at Eagle High on Saturday.
“Centennial was by far the most athletic team that we’ve faced this season,” said second-year Lake City coach Kevin Jump, whose team finished with its 14th shutout of the season. “We watched the Centennial-Boise game (Thursday), and Centennial absolutely dominated them despite falling in two overtimes. Fortunately, we also have some gifted athletes and matched up very well with them.”
Jump also praised Lake City junior midfielder Ben Hannigan-Luther for his match.
“Ben was nothing short of spectacular today,” Jump said. “Ben spearheaded our defense to a school record 14th clean sheet today.”
Lake City, playing for its first trophy at state since 2018 (consolation title), finished 17-1-0.
“This is a very special group of young men and we nearly pulled off the greatest soccer season in Idaho high school history,” Jump said. “I’m very proud of them. We finished 17-1-0, and allowed only five goals all season. We wanted to bring home the state championship — but, we came up just short. It’s hard to imagine ever getting to coach a team this special.”
Schoener scored from 30 yards out for the winner.
“We started a little sluggish today because we had tired legs and were nursing a variety of injuries,” Jump said. “We finally settled into the game about 15 minutes into the first half. In the second half, we had several quality shots on goal and finally, Gavin sent a bullet strike and it caught the Centennial goalkeeper off guard.”
Centennial, which beat Highland in a state play-in match, finished 13-8-1.
