Co-op Tigers cap regular season with 7-1 record

If you combine one group of Tigers with another group of Tigers, what do you get?
When it comes to the high school football co-op St. Regis Tigers and the Mullan, Idaho Tigers, you get a lot of wins and a string of playoff appearances.
That combination worked again this year as the Tigers-times-two finished the regular season with a 7-1 record and another Idaho football conference regular season crown.
The latest victim of the co-opers is Wallace, Idaho, which fell to the two-state Tigers 52-20 Friday evening in Wallace.
St. Regis-Mullan scored early and often, piling up a 22-0 lead by the end of the first quarter behind a potent offensive and a stingy defense. By halftime, the Tigers were ahead 36-6.
Both teams scored a touchdown and 2-point after touchdown (PAT) conversion in the third quarter, giving St. Regis-Mullan a comfortable 44-14 lead with one quarter to play.
The Tigers added a touchdown and two-point PAT conversion in the fourth quarter while yielding a touchdown with no PAT to the Miners to close out the game scoring.
The win sends St. Regis-Mullan to the state playoffs as the District One-8 man regular season champs for the fifth year in a row under the coaching leadership of Jesse Allan and Stetson Spooner.
In the course of five years, the Tigers have compiled a 35-game winning streak dating back to September of 2019.
Against the Miners, senior running back John Pruitt continued his assault on the record book with his eighth straight 100-plus yards rushing per game. Pruitt had a whopping 172 yards on the ground on just five carries Friday night, including a 62-yard scoring run. He had three touchdowns rushing for the game and added a 20-yard touchdown on a pass thrown by freshman quarterback Conner Lulis, who also hooked up with sophomore Barrett Bassette on a TD scoring play.
Lulis finished with 40 total yards passing for the ground oriented Tigers.
Pruitt’s senior running back partner Kofi Appiah had 50 yards rushing on five carries for the Tigers, whose only loss of the year was two weeks ago to the Shelby, MT Coyotes.
For the season, Pruitt has accumulated 1,027 yards rushing on 64 carries, a 16 yards per carry average and an average of 114 yards per game this season. He has scored 16 touchdowns on the ground this year, with just one fumble all season. Pruitt has also scored 10 receiving touchdowns on 22 receptions for a total of 559 yards this year.
Appiah, who stepped in to fill the running back void left by a knee injury that sidelined senior Alex Trogden after the third game of the year, has picked up 635 yards on 48 carries while scoring 13 touchdowns. Appiah has another two touchdowns receiving on two receptions this year.
Lulis, who took over for highly successful Caleb Ball, who graduated this past Spring and is now playing college football at Western Montana, erased all concerns about his youth and inexperience early on and had a solid freshman year at quarterback.
Lulis completed 54 percent of his passes (59-110), good for 1,302 yards and 18 touchdowns. He threw just four interceptions for the year and connected with six different receivers who averaged more than 20 yards per reception.
“Conner is a smart young guy who capitalizes on opportunities to sling the rock,” Allan said.
On defense, Pruitt recorded more than 100 tackles for the year.
“These stats show it has been a decent balance for us,” Allan said. “We are excited to be back in the playoffs again and hosting Hagerman, Idaho, November 4th in Mullan”.
