BASIN SPORTS RECAP: District playoffs begin

COLUMBIA BASIN — District playoffs began this week around the Basin, with local football, girls soccer and volleyball teams all vying for a bid to their respective state tournaments. Check out this week’s Basin sports recap to look at how teams look toward the end of their regular seasons.

All scores, records and seedings are according to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. Results from Thursday’s games were not available at press time.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline

Football

The Warriors responded to Oct. 13’s loss to Wilbur-Creston-Keller by defeating Odessa 32-14 at home last Friday, gaining over 400 yards of offense in the win. Senior Jaxon Baergen scored three touchdowns against the Tigers, reaching the end zone twice on carries of six and 11 yards and once through the air on a 14-yard catch. 

ACH (6-2) hosts Republic on Friday in a division crossover matchup. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Volleyball (11-2): 3-2 over WCK on Oct. 17, 3-1 over Mary Walker on Tuesday. 

Ephrata

Football

Ephrata (5-3) suffered its third loss of the year last Thursday on the road against Prosser, losing 28-21 to the Mustangs on the road. Senior Eric O’Neel scored all three of the Tigers’ touchdowns in the loss, scoring on runs of four, one and 24 yards. With a 4-1 record in the Central Washington Conference, the Tigers can advance to state with a win over Ellensburg on Friday night.

Girls Soccer (8-9): 1-0 win vs Grandview in district playoffs Tuesday, at No. 1 East Valley (Yakima) Thursday.

Volleyball (10-3): 3-0 wins over Othello on Oct. 17, East Valley on Oct. 19, Grandview on Tuesday.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague

Volleyball

The Broncos began the Northeast 2B district tournament with wins over Asotin and Northwest Christian (Colbert) on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, defeating the Tigers 3-0 on Tuesday and the Crusaders 3-1 on Wednesday. LRS (16-1) faced off against Colfax on Thursday in the district title game, with both teams qualifying for the 2B District 6/7 Crossover.

Football (5-3): 20-8 loss to Lake Roosevelt Friday.

Moses Lake

Slowpitch Softball

Moses Lake got back to the 4A State Slowpitch Softball Tournament with Saturday’s 11-5 win over Eastmont in the Columbia Basin Big 9 district title game. The Mavs came out strong, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning before taking a 9-0 lead after four innings. Moses Lake received a No. 3 seed in the state tournament and plays No. 6 Skyview on Friday at noon at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.

Girls Soccer (8-8): 4-2 loss to West Valley on Oct. 17, 4-1 win vs Davis Saturday, 4-1 loss to Wenatchee on Tuesday.

Volleyball (7-7): 3-1 loss to West Valley (Oct. 17), 3-1 loss to Davis (Oct. 19), 3-0 loss to Wenatchee on Tuesday.

MLCA/CCS

Football

The Lions lost for the first time in their program’s history on Saturday night, falling to 7-1 after a 68-32 loss to Waterville-Mansfield at home. Up next, MLCA/CCS hosts undefeated Liberty Bell on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Lions Field.

Volleyball (6-10): 3-0 wins vs Pateros on Oct. 16 and Bridgeport on Oct. 17, 3-0 loss to Waterville-Mansfield on Saturday.

Othello

Football

Friday night’s 42-24 win over Kelso improved the Huskies to 6-2 this season, remaining in second place in the CWAC with a 4-1 league record. Othello scored six rushing touchdowns in the win, led by senior Alex Mendez who had three scores in the second half.

A win this Friday against East Valley will send the Huskies to the 2A State Football Tournament.

Girls Soccer (6-10): 3-0 win over Ellensburg Oct. 17, 1-0 loss to Grandview Oct. 19, 1-0 loss to Prosser on Tuesday in district tournament play. Huskies face the loser of Ephrata/East Valley in the consolation bracket Saturday.

Volleyball (7-6): 3-0 loss to Ephrata Oct. 17, 3-0 win over East Valley on Tuesday.

Quincy

Football

The Jacks scored 22 points in the second quarter against Medical Lake on Friday, eventually riding out a 43-0 win over the Cardinals. Quincy outgained Medical Lake 426-125 in total yards in the win, shutting out an opponent for the third time this season. Caribou Trail League play comes to a close for the Jacks on Friday with a road game against Cashmere.

Girls Soccer (11-6): 2-1 loss to Cascade (Leavenworth) Oct. 17, 4-0 win over Omak on Oct. 19, 5-0 loss to Cashmere on Tuesday.

Volleyball (6-9): 3-0 win vs Cascade Oct. 17, 3-0 loss to Omak Oct. 19, 3-1 win vs. Royal on Saturday.

Royal

Football

Royal scored 48 points in the first half of Friday night’s win over College Place, highlighted by a six-touchdown performance by quarterback Lance Allred; the junior completed 10 of 13 passes for 240 yards, six touchdowns and one interception in the win. Senior Case Christensen led the Knights in receiving with four catches for 87 yards and two scores.

Girls Soccer (10-4-2): 1-0 win vs Kiona-Benton on Oct. 17, 3-0 win vs College Place on Oct. 19. The Knights began district play Thursday night.

Volleyball (8-7): 3-0 win vs Kiona-Benton Oct. 17, 3-0 loss to College Place on Oct. 19, 3-1 loss to Quincy on Saturday, 3-0 win vs La Salle on Tuesday.

Soap Lake

Volleyball

Soap Lake earned a No. 3 seed in the Central Washington B tournament, matching up against No. 6 MLCA/CCS in the second round on Thursday. The Eagles finished the regular season with an 11-3 record.

Football (5-5): 50-7 win vs Pateros on Friday.

Wahluke

Girls Soccer

Wahluke found difficulties on offense in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Kiona-Benton, struggling to connect passes and generate offense in the loss. The Warriors (7-7) opened the district tournament on the road against Naches Valley on Thursday night.

Football (2-5): 28-7 loss to La Salle on Friday.

Volleyball (2-14): 3-0 losses to College Place on Oct. 17 and Connell on Oct. 19, 3-0 win over Kiona-Benton on Tuesday.

Warden

Volleyball

Warden picked up its fourth-straight win with Saturday’s sweep of Tonasket, just three days after also sweeping Columbia (Burbank) on Wednesday night. The 14-1 Cougars traveled to River View on Thursday night, the only team that has defeated Warden this season.

Girls Soccer (4-10): 8-0 loss to Cle Elum on Oct. 17, 3-0 loss to Highland Oct. 19, 4-1 win vs Columbia on Tuesday.

Wilson Creek

Volleyball

The Devils finished the regular season in fourth place in the Central Washington B League with an 8-5 record in league contests, earning a No. 4 seed in the district tournament. Wilson Creek faced Riverside Christian in the second round of the tournament Thursday night.

    The Warden Cougars wrapped up their regular season with Thursday night’s road game against River View.
 
 
    The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos faced off against Northwest Christian (Colbert) in the Northeast 2B district championship game on Thursday.
 
 
    The Almira/Coulee-Hartline Warriors stand at 11-2 ahead of Thursday’s home match against Odessa.
 
 
    The South Central Athletic Conference district tournament began Thursday, with the Royal Knights hosting La Salle and the Wahluke Warriors traveling to Naches Valley.
 
 
    Ephrata senior Eric O’Neel scored all three of the Tigers’ touchdowns in Ephrata’s loss to Prosser on Oct. 19.
