State high school volleyball tournaments by the numbers

NOTE: Play at all six sites today consists of matches on side-by-side courts. On Saturday, the four remaining teams play on one court at each site. Championship matches are scheduled for 4 p.m.

At Lake City High, Coeur d’Alene

Defending champion: Madison

DIGS: A Kootenai County team has won just one state title in the state’s largest classification, since the tournament began in 1976 — Coeur d’Alene, in 1987. Lewiston went back-to-back in 2012 and ’13, and Sandpoint won nine of its 14 state titles in the largest division. … Coeur d’Alene is seeded second, Post Falls third this year … Post Falls was third in 2022, fourth in 2021. The Trojans played in the state title match in 2011, losing to Idaho Falls … Coeur d’Alene is at state for the first time since 2020. The Vikings last played for the state title in 2014, falling to Idaho Falls .... Madison of Rexburg, the top seed this year, is at state for the eighth straight years, and brought home a trophy each of the last seven trips — first in 2018 and ’22, second in 2021, third in 2016, ’17 and ’19, and consolation champs in 2020 (when the tournament was single-elimination with a consolation bracket because of COVID-19). The Bobcats have won five state titles all-told … Eagle, the No. 4 seed, is at state for the fifth straight year. The Mustangs have won five state titles, the last in 2009.

At Post Falls High

Defending champion: Skyview.

DIGS: Skyview of Nampa has bounced between 4A and 5A in recent years, with equal success at state. The Hawks have played in the state title match each of the last eight seasons. In 4A, Skyview won in 2016, ’17 and 22, and was second in 2015. In 5A, The Hawks won in 2020 and ’21, and were second in 2018 and ’19. Picking pre-tournament favorites in the two division usually starts with noting which division Skyview is playing in that year. This year the Hawks, in part because they play in a lot of tournaments and MaxPreps does not factor those results into its rankings, is the No. 3 seed … Bonneville of Idaho Falls, the No. 1 seed, was fourth at state last year. The Bees have won 10 state titles, and have played for the title six times since 2015, with victories in 2016, ’17 and ’19 … Twin Falls, the No. 6 seed, won in 2021 … No. 2 Lakeland, making its first appearance since winning the state title in 2020, opens vs. No. 7 Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls. The Riverhawks, making their fifth state appearance, are seeking their first state trophy. They went two-and-out last year … The last four state champs are in this field — Bonneville (2019), Lakeland (2020), Twin Falls (2021) and Skyview (2022).

At Coeur d’Alene High

Defending champion: Kimberly

DIGS: Bonners Ferry, the No. 7 seed, is at state for the second straight year, and seventh time this century. The Badgers are seeking their first trophy since finishing fourth in 1994 … Kimberly, the third seed, is seeking its fourth straight top-3 finish. The Bulldogs were second (to Sugar-Salem) in 2020, and third in ’21 … Fruitland, the No. 4 seed, was second twice in the last four years, including last year. The Grizzlies won in 2012 and ’14 … Marsh Valley qualified for state for first time since 2003. The eighth-seeded Eagles open vs. top seed McCall-Donnelly. The Vandals went two-and-out last year … Snake River, the No. 2 seed, was fourth last year.

At Lewis-Clark State College, Lewiston

Defending champion: Troy

DIGS: Troy is the top seed again this year, seeking a three-peat and a 15th state title overall … Wallace, the fifth seed, won a state title in 1994 … Grace, the No. 2 seed, won the state title in 2020, denying Troy a three-peat.

Defending champion: Horseshoe Bend
