STATE 4A PLAYOFFS: Slow start dooms Lakeland in loss to Twin Falls

TWIN FALLS — A first-half hole proved too big for the Lakeland Hawks to pull themselves out of Friday night.

The 13th-seeded Hawks fell behind 21-0 in the first half and lost 28-12 to the fourth-seeded Twin Falls Cowboys in the first round of the state 4A playoffs at Bruin Stadium.

Dalton Carter scooped up Greyson Keyes’ blocked punt and ran it in from 3 yards out with 8:24 left in the first quarter to open the scoring for Twin Falls.

Wyatt Solosabal caught two TD passes from Austin Crum, and ran for another score. His 25-yard jaunt made it 21-0 with 5:24 left in the half.

Lakeland sophomore quarterback Peyton Hillman, the third signal caller the Hawks used this season because of injuries, ran 18 yards on fourth and 3 to put the Hawks on the board with 42.9 seconds left in the first half.

Roan Reilly returned an interception 50 yards for a Lakeland touchdown early in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

Lakeland, in the playoffs for the fourth straight year, and seeking its first postseason victory since 2007, finished 5-5.

Twin Falls (9-1) advances to play No. 5 Skyline (7-3) of Idaho Falls in the quarterfinals.
