Celebrate summer while it lasts

North Idaho is heaven in summer and, despite a day or two of chilly reminders of what's to come, those autumn sweaters can remain cozy in their drawer.

At least for a day or two.

“Saturday looks like the day to get outside,” said Rachael Fewkes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Spokane.

The high is expected to hit 85 today with sunshine throughout the day.

“I grew up in that kind of weather so that sounds perfect,” Paula Staggs said while spending time with her grandchildren. “We have a couple of things to celebrate as a family, so we’re going to do something on Sunday night.”

Her grandkids start school Tuesday, so she’s cramming in as much time with them and her family as she can.

Just earlier in the week they went kayaking and took a day trip to Silverwood Theme Park. And Staggs has a lot more planned for the weekend, like Silverwood again, or a barbecue with her son, possibly a hike and maybe kayaking before a sleepover.

It's unlikely the sunshine will last through Sunday and Monday.

“It’s going to be beautiful, but Sunday’s when we start to see returning chances of showers," Fewkes said. "We have pretty reasonable confidence in seeing showers up over the Panhandle National Forests through Monday.”

Sunday will likely cool down to a high of 78 and reach a high of about 71 Monday, before climbing to 75 Tuesday.

Fewkes recommended carrying light jackets or sweaters for the evenings, because evening temperatures will drop into the low 50s Sunday and Monday.

Sunday and Monday will still be good for barbecuing, Fewkes said.

School is starting and summer is closing, but September should still see a few more waves of above average temperatures, based on the climate prediction center's long-term forecast.

“At the end of the next few weeks higher temperatures in the 80s could happen, but 90s are likely not returning,” Fewkes said. “It’s not unheard of for September, but it’s not looking likely. We might get a bit above average but not in the 90s."

It’s likely temperatures will linger around the normal ranges overall throughout the month, she said.

“Normal for this time of year is typically highs between upper 70s and lower 80s and average lows are between low to mid-50s," Fewkes said.

Normal or not, Staggs remains steadfastly nonplussed.

“We don’t really let weather affect our plans,” she said. “We just figure something out."
