PREP SWIM: Sandpoint swim team dives into action

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 10, 2023 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE – The Sandpoint swim team kicked off their season at the IEL Icebreaker swim meet held at the Kroc Center Saturday. The boys finished fourth out of eight teams while the girls placed third out of seven teams.

Junior Ryleigh Bamer, captain of the swim team this year, continues to excel posting strong early season swims in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly, and multiple relays.

“She has proven to be an excellent leader in and out of the pool,” Sandpoint head coach Greg Jackson said. “Her leadership is directly correlating to the success of herself and her teammates.”

Jackson also noted how he was impressed with sophomore capitan McCoy Jensen’s dedication and is excited to see his potential play out over the years, and with junior Terra Converse for trusting in her plan, supporting her team, and working hard to improve her technique.

Just as impressive for the Bulldogs, sophomore Kai Leavitt had arguably one of the biggest performances on the day, improving his 100-meter freestyle by over three seconds since last season.

The Sandpoint swim team will be back in action at the University of Idaho on Saturday, Sept. 16.
