BASIN SPORTS RECAP: Othello soccer moves to 3-0, Mav football pulls off close road win

COLUMBIA BASIN — Fall sports season is in full swing around the Columbia Basin, with the past week featuring numerous matchups between schools in the area. Read along for a full recap of how local football, volleyball and girls soccer teams fared over the season's first full week. All scores are according to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline

Football

ACH posted 446 rushing yards on 51 carries in Friday’s 50-21 road win against Entiat, where five Warriors reached the end zone in the win. Junior Carter Pitts led the way with three rushing scores, followed by junior Harvest Parrish, freshman Max Grindy, sophomore Caden Correia and sophomore Brady Roberts. The Warriors will host the defending 1B state champion Liberty Bell on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Volleyball

The Warriors were victorious in their first two games of the season, first a 3-0 sweep of Reardan on the road Thursday before another 3-0 win over Waterville-Mansfield at home Saturday evening. Against the Shockers, ACH claimed set wins of 25-13, 25-11 and 26-24. Up this week for the Warriors is a road trip to Wellpinit on Tuesday and a home game against Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame on Thursday.

Ephrata

Football

Girls soccer

Ephrata moved to 3-1 on the year after wins over Okanogan (9-1) on Tuesday and Royal (9-1) on Saturday, as well as a loss to Cashmere (3-1) on the road Thursday. Against the Knights on Saturday, Ephrata had seven players score in the win; junior Kaydence Hector (twice), sophomore Delanie Killinger, senior Aliya Avila (twice), sophomore Lila Rainey, senior Karissa Cleveringa, senior Trishelle Lopez and senior Alessa Soto. Ephrata opens Central Washington Athletic Conference play on Tuesday on the road against Grandview and hosts Selah on Thursday.

Volleyball

The Tigers split last week’s games, first a 3-0 loss on the road to Pullman on Tuesday before a sweep of Omak at home Thursday. Against the Pioneers, Ephrata won with set scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-14. Senior Addison Mills led the Tigers in aces (four) and kills (21) and tied with junior Audreyah Gray for a team-high in digs (11). Junior Alixandria Helaas led the way with 31 assists. Ephrata plays host to Quincy on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and hosts the Ephrata Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague

Football

The Broncos lit up the scoreboard in a 60-14 win over Liberty (Spangle) on Friday night, avenging an early-season loss to the Lancers from the 2022 season. Now 2-0, LRS goes back on the road Friday, traveling to Tri-Cities Prep for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Volleyball

LRS racked up a win in the team’s season-opener on the road against Odessa on Thursday, winning 3-1 over the Tigers. The Broncos wrap up non-conference games this week with a home game against Wilbur-Creston-Keller on Tuesday and a road game against Columbia (Burbank) on Wednesday.

Moses Lake

Football

The Mavs improved to 2-0 with a road win against Kamiakin on Thursday, defeating the Braves 15-14. Moses Lake plays host to Eisenhower this Friday at 7 p.m. in the team’s first Columbia Basin Big-Nine game of the season.

Girls soccer

Moses Lake wrapped up its early-season non-conference slate last week, falling to both Lewis & Clark 4-3 on the road on Tuesday and 4-0 to Mead at home Saturday. The Mavs begin CBBN play this week with games against Eisenhower on the road Tuesday and Eastmont at home Saturday.

Volleyball

In the team’s season opener against Lewis & Clark, Moses Lake fell 3-0 to the Tigers on Tuesday. Moses Lake checked into the win column Thursday on the road against Prosser, defeating the Mustangs in a 3-0 sweep. The sets fell 25-18, 25-8 and 25-14 in favor of the Mavericks, with junior Kenna Stuart leading the team in kills (12), senior Paytan Andrews leading the Mavs in blocks (five), senior Raegen Hofheins leading the team in digs (12) and senior Ashlyn Harrison leading the way in assists (12). Stuart, Harrison and Hofheins all tied for a team-high in aces (two). Moses Lake begins CBBN play at home against Eisenhower on Tuesday, then travels to Eastmont on Thursday.

MLCA/CCS

Football

MLCA/CCS improved to 2-0 in their inaugural season, defeating Pateros 54-20 at Lions Field on Friday night. The Lions now set their eyes on hosting Soap Lake this Saturday at 6 p.m.

Volleyball

The Lions fell in their opening game of the season Tuesday, a 3-0 loss to Sunnyside Christian on the road. MLCA/CCS begins conference play on the road Tuesday against Wilson Creek, then travels to Entiat on Thursday.

Othello

Football

The Huskies fell to Royal on the road Friday night, a 42-7 game in favor of the Knights. The Huskies had some success early in the game with passes deep down the field, but adjustments by the Knights allowed Royal’s defense to intercept four Huskie passes. Othello opens CWAC play at home against Ephrata on Friday at 7 p.m.

Girls soccer

The Huskies improved to 3-0 with wins over Quincy (2-1) on Tuesday and Shadle Park (3-1) on Thursday to close out the early-season non-league games for Othello. Senior Naraiah Guzman scored all three goals in Othello’s win over Shadle Park on Thursday. Othello travels to Selah on Tuesday, the team’s lone game of the next week.

Volleyball

Othello won its season opener 3-1 over Quincy on Tuesday, a 3-1 win over the Jacks. Set scores were 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-22, with the Huskies winning the first, third and fourth sets. Othello hosts Royal on Tuesday and Connell on Thursday.

Quincy

Girls soccer

After falling to Othello in the team’s season opener Tuesday, Quincy battled back for a late win against Wahluke on the road Thursday. Junior Crystal Vargas scored two goals in the win, the second coming in second-half stoppage time that gave the Jacks a win over Wahluke. On Saturday, Quincy scored 10 goals in a shutout win over Mabton on the road. Quincy hosts Warden in a non-league game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Volleyball

Quincy fell 3-1 to Othello in the first game of the season Tuesday, bouncing back with a 3-0 win over Wahluke on the road Thursday. Up this week for the Jacks is a road game against Ephrata before opening up Caribou Trail League play at home against Cashmere on Wednesday.

Royal

Football

Royal totaled 409 total yards in Friday’s 42-7 win against Othello, with quarterback Lance Allred throwing for 209 yards and three touchdowns and the run game totaling 192 yards and three scores. Juniors Ethan Ellis and Jared Lee combined for 100 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in the win, and junior Jackson Larsen caught two passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Royal hits the road for the first time this season against Zillah on Friday.

Girls soccer

After a 1-1 tie to Naches Valley at home Tuesday, where junior Taylor Webb scored against the Rangers, the Knights fell 9-1 on the road to Ephrata on Saturday. Junior Audrey Burgeson scored the Knights’ goal against the Tigers. Up this week for Royal is a home game against Chelan on Tuesday and a road contest against Toppenish on Thursday.

Volleyball

Royal opened the 2023 season with a sweep of Naches Valley on Thursday, the team’s lone outing last week. The Knights travel to Othello on Tuesday and to Toppenish on Thursday this week.

Soap Lake

Football

The Eagles fell on the road to Republic in a high-scoring 60-48 game Friday night, dropping to 0-2 on the year. Soap Lake hits the road next week against MLCA/CCS on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Volleyball

Soap Lake fell in its season opener on the road to Republic on Thursday. The Eagles play their first game at home Tuesday against Easton, later traveling to Thorp on Thursday.

Wahluke

Football

The Warriors claimed their first win of the season at home against Warden on Friday, defeating the Cougars 30-6. Wahluke travels to Naches Valley for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.

Girls soccer

Wahluke went 1-1-1 in its first three games of the season; the first being a 5-1 win over Zillah on Tuesday, then a 3-2 loss to Quincy on Thursday and a 4-4 draw to Northwest Christian (Colbert) on Saturday. The Warriors host Wapato on Tuesday in the team’s lone outing this week.

Volleyball

The Warriors fell in both outings last week, a 3-0 loss to Zillah on Tuesday and a 3-0 loss to Quincy on Thursday. Wahluke travels to Wapato on Tuesday and hosts Warden on Thursday.

Warden

Football

The Cougars fell to 1-1 this season with a 30-6 loss on the road to Wahluke on Friday, but will have a chance to get back on track with the first of three straight home games being against Kiona-Benton City on Friday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

Warden opened up the season on the road against Cle Elum on Tuesday, coming back from two sets down to win 3-2. Set scores against the Warriors were as follows; 25-22, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20 and 15-9. Junior Lauren Chamberlain led with seven aces, junior Raegan Golladay had 16 digs and Chamberlain, Golladay and senior Lauryn Madsen tied for a team-high in kills (seven).

At home against Mabton on Thursday, the Cougars swept the visiting Vikings 3-0. Madsen led with nine kills, senior Briana Martinez had seven digs and Chamberlain had nine aces in the win. Warden hosted East Valley (Yakima) on Monday, but scores were not available in time for press deadline.

Wilson Creek

Volleyball

The Devils fell 3-0 to Waterville-Mansfield in the team’s season opener Thursday, and play host to MLCA/CCS on Tuesday.
