Winning on the road is never easy, they say. By that way of thinking the Plains Trotters volleyball crew had a decent week.

The Trotters opened last week’s schedule with a game at Mission versus the Lady Bulldogs in St. Ignatius. They left after losing a hard fought match to the Dogs, falling 3-0 in a match that was much closer than the final score might indicate.

Whatever they lost in St. Ignatius they exorcised by this past Saturday night when they traveled to Superior and came away with a 3-0 win over the Western 7B conference newcomer Lady Bobcats.

Thursday night at Mission, the two teams put on a show for the first two games, with multiple lead changes and ties. When the smoke cleared after the first set, St. Ignatius had escaped with a 26-24 win in the volleyball equivalent of overtime.

Before the fans could blink, set number two was underway and it was a carbon copy of the first set.

Number two ended in a hard-fought 27-25 win for the home team, giving them a commanding 2-0 match lead.

After expending the level of energy they did in the first two sets, things fell off the edge for the Trotters, who dropped the third set 25-11.

A couple of bright spots for Plains was the match high 17 digs recorded by Jaelyn Carr and the 11 assists contributed by Blakely Lakko. Sophomore Lexi Deming led the Trotters with five kills.

Perhaps frustration fueled the match against Superior Saturday night when the Trotters swept past the Lady Bobcats 3-0.

Plains was in control from the outset, jumping to an 8-1 first set lead and cruising to a 25-6 win for a 1-0 match lead. They kept up the pressure the rest of the evening, first by taking set number two 25-14, then following that with a match-clinching 25-15 win in set three.

The win over Superior squared the Trotters conference record at 1-1. Next up for Plains is a road game this Thursday against arch-rival Thompson Falls. Superior, meanwhile hosts Mission this Thursday, then travels to Seeley Saturday for a late afternoon match with the Blackhawks.
