Born Sept. 5, 1929, to parents William Viau and Ruth Ebel Viau in St. Paul, Minn., Phyllis embarked on a life that was nothing short of extraordinary:
A trailblazer from a young age, Phyllis earned her student pilot certificate Aug. 9, 1948, at the tender age of 16. She wore this achievement as a badge of pride, a testament to her determination.
Phyllis proudly served her country in the Navy between 1950 and 1952, a period she held dear as an important chapter in her life's journey.
Her union with Edward Hanson brought forth a family of three children, Greg Hanson, Bruce Hanson and Denise Hanson. The legacy of her love extended through five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In the face of life's challenges, Phyllis displayed unwavering strength. She boldly forged a new path in Arizona, achieving great success and stability, eventually becoming a self-sufficient woman with a new home and life. Northern Idaho beckoned, drawing Phyllis closer to her children, who had settled in the region. She became an integral part of her community, actively participating in church and local groups.
Her devotion to adult Bible study led her on a mission to Honduras to help underprivileged children, even in her 80s, a testament to her unwavering faith and dedication. Phyllis maintained her physical vigor, walking 305 miles in one year with her cherished friends in "The Striders" club. Her adventurous spirit took her on numerous journeys, often with her dear friend Ada, exploring faraway places and ocean cruises. Phyllis embarked on 10 cruises during her time as an independent and self-sufficient woman.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth Viau, her brother, Edward Viau, and her ex-husband, Edward Hanson. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Greg Hanson of Inglis, Fla.; Bruce Hanson of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and Denise Smith of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
