St. Regis sweeps Two Eagle River

In the wacky world that is the Western 14C volleyball conference life is, as has been said, like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.
With apologies to Forrest Gump, that saying rings true so far this year for the ultra-competitive conference and its members.
So when St. Regis sweeps Two Eagle River, 3-0, then falls 3-0 to Charlo two nights later, it is not anything out of the ordinary.
Noxon stands atop the conference with a 4-1 overall record, while second place belongs to new varsity member Alberton, 2-2 on the year.
St. Regis made it business as usual in the topsy-turvy league in two conference games last week.
Thursday night on their home court, the Lady Tigers squared off with Charlo, which is typically on top of the conference standings throughout the year.
The first two sets of the game were about as close as they get, with multiple ties and lead changes the norm from the opening serve. The opening set featured seven ties after Charlo jumped out to a slim lead in the early going.
It was last tied at 23, when an off the ceiling ball in the St. Regis gym gave the Lady Vikes a one-point advantage. They closed out the set one serve later, winning 25-23 to take a hard-earned 1-0 match lead.
Set two was more of the same, with the visitors taking a slim early lead and hanging on as the Lady Tigers staged multiple rallies before succumbing 25-20.
Then, as tight as it had been, and with Charlo holding a 2-0 match lead, set three was pretty much all Lady Vikings as they eased into a 25-15 win to secure the 3-0 match sweep.
Two nights later St. Regis journeyed up Highway 93 to Pablo, home of the Two Eagle River Lady Eagles and reversed the process on the win-less TER team.
But last place TER did not make it easy for the visitors, who took a quick 1-0 match lead via a 25-18 start to finish first set win. St Regis followed that with an overwhelming 25-10 win in the second quarter and moved within one game of the coveted sweep.
Someone forgot to tell TER the match was all but over.
The Lady Eagles hustled and scrapped the whole set, only to come out on the losing end of a 26-24 score in favor of St. Regis.
A split of sweeps was the Tigers’ reward for a week of conference play.
The Lady Tigers cross the I-90 pass into Idaho this week for a game tonight (Tuesday) with Wallace, and a home match the next night against football co-op partner Mullan, Idaho on the Lady Tigers’ home court.
