It was a classic confrontation between two Class B heavyweights as Superior entertained Valley Christian this past Friday night on Homecoming night in Superior.
The visiting Eagles came in with a 3-0 record, while the Bobcats stood at 2-1 on the season, their only loss a last minute defeat at the hands of St. Regis-Mullan, Idaho.
On this night, the Eagles flew away with a 38-26 win in a hard-fought game between two physical teams.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard first when 6-3, 225 pound senior quarterback Jaxon Green plowed into the end zone from six yards out. The PAT attempt failed, leaving the Cats with a 6-0 lead as time expired in the first quarter.
Valley Christian answered that score in the opening minute of the second quarter thanks to a 49-yard scoring pass from Stoltsfus to Fisher. The PAT run was successful, putting VC in front 8-6.
Superior answered that score on the Bobcats next possession, when Lucas Kovalsky hauled in a 65-yard catch and run pass from Green with 10:45 to play in the first half. The PAT was not good, but the Bobcats moved into the lead at 12-8.
Kovalsky scored again with 6:51 left in the second quarter, this time on a 21-yard TD run. The missed PAT try gave Superior an 18-8 lead.
With 30 second remaining in the first half, Valley Christian cut the lead to 18-16 via a 22 yard strike from Stoltsfus to Fisher. The duo then connected on a passing PAT.
At halftime, Superior was clinging to a two-point lead.
In the opening minutes of the second half, freshman running back Gannon Quinlan broke loose on a 57-yard scamper for six, putting Superior ahead 24-16. The PAT run was good, boosting the Cats advantage to 26-16.
Midway through the third quarter, Valley Christian began eating away at the Superior lead, first via a 35-yard scoring run by Stolsfus, who add the two-point PAT to bring the scoring to 26-24 in favor of Superior.
The Eagles defense pitched a shutout at the Bobcats the rest of the way, then added a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to ice the victory.
Fisher scored on a five-yard run with 10:49 left in the fourth quarter, then Stoltfus broke through the Cats line on a two yard run with just over three minutes left in the game.
Green finished the game with 197 passing yards on 10 completions out of 24 passes and one TD. Quinlan led the Bobcats in rushing yards with 66, while Kovalsky ran for 55 yards and Green added 27.
Kovalsky led the Bobcats in tackles with 14, including one sack, while Quinlan continued his outstanding freshman season with 12 tackles.
Kovalsky also led the Cats in receiving with 172 yards on seven catches.
The loss dropped the Bobcats to 2-2 on the year, while VC stayed unbeaten and ran its record to 4-0.
Superior’s next game is this Friday (Sept 22) at 7 pm in Arlee against the Warriors.
