Glacier girls, Sentinel boys seize Western AA golf leads

HELENA — The Western AA golfers are back at Bill Roberts Golf Course, and the Sentinel boys came to play.
While Glacier’s girls seized the first-day lead at the 36-hole tournament — with Chloe Tanner shooting the best round, a 76 — the Missoula Sentinel boys went extremely low to put some pressure on a Wolfpack boys team that hasn’t lost a tournament this season.
First, the girls: Tanner, who was medalist at last week’s Kalispell Invitational, shot a consistent (38-38) 76 to build a two-stroke lead over Missoula Hellgate standout Anna Stensrud.
Teammates Kendall Tkachyk (94) and Braelyn Ryan (96) gave Glacier three golfers in the top 15, and a four-stroke lead in the team standings over Helena Capital, at 369.
Helena and Hellgate are tied for third at 384 and Flathead (392), with Payzlee Boyce shooting an 84, is in fifth.
Meanwhile Sentinel’s boys were lighting up the course. Led by Hudson Goroski and Kade McDonough shooting 65 and 66, the Spartans built a 19-stroke lead over Glacier.
Goroski was at 10-under after going eagle-birdie on Nos. 14-15; McDonough, meanwhile, closed with a birdie on 16 and an eagle on 18.
Gabe Shepard fired a 71 to cap a 1-2-3 finish by the Spartans, who as a team shot 12-under 276.
Glacier, with Trevor Cunningham coming in at 73 and a trio of golfers — Sam Engellant, Tanyon Murray and Torren Murray — shooting 74, fired a very solid 295. Yet the Pack faces a formidable gap to stay unbeaten.
Helena Capital is third at 301. Flathead, with Dylan Morris sitting in a tie for fourth at 72, is sixth at 319.
The tournament concludes on the same course Thursday. The top four teams, plus the top 10 individuals not connected to the top four teams, will qualify for the State AA tournament Sept. 28-29 at Lake Hills Golf Course in Billings.
