Boys dominate at weekend games

ST. MARIES — Fresh off a victory over Stillwater Christian, the Badger boys soccer (7-3-1) blew the 3A St. Maries Lumberjacks (0-10) out of the water Saturday, Sept. 23, scoring double digits in an 11-1 win.

Bonners Ferry head coach Paul Bonnell said the team scored early and built a substantial lead.

“Tyson Tadlock played in goal and we were able to play a range of players,” he said.

The Badgers play top league opponent league Coeur d’Alene Charter (7-2-2) on Friday at home.

On Sept. 22, the Badgers defeated Stillwater Christian 2-0.

Badger JV also had the opportunity to play and scored early on a cross shot goal by Kaden Rubish.

“Stillwater countered in the second half and went up 2-1. We were never quite able to recover from that lapse, even though we made a solid effort to do so,” Bonnell said.

“In the varsity game, we knew we would have to play with confidence and a high level of intensity right from the whistle,” he said.

That’s just what Bonners Ferry did, scoring early on a cross from Jesse Dye and a header goal by Eli Newell.

Newell scored again on a breakaway from a through pass made by Milan Von Busekist.

“We played well as a team throughout the second half, securing a solid win,” Bonnell said.

Girls go 1-1 over the weekend

ST. MARIES — Badger girls soccer (6-5) defeated the 4A St. Maries Lumberjacks (0-6) on Sept. 23, scoring six goals, four of which in the first quarter.

“Hallie Thomson did really well in goal, with six or seven saves,” said Bonners Ferry head coach Emily Winebark. “She is getting much more comfortable coming out of the goal for 50/50 balls.”

Bonners Ferry had the opportunity to play many younger JV players on Saturday. Winebark said the players did well.

“Nevaeh Therrien really stood out on the outside defense and goals were scored by Makenna Baisden and Nolie Hiatt, both first year players,” she said.

Bonners Ferry girls soccer is currently ranked third in the conference, behind Timberlake and Coeur d’Alene Charter.

On Sept. 22, the Badgers fell to Stillwater Christian (2-2) by 3-4. Earlier in the season, the Badgers defeated the Cougars 4-0.

“Stillwater was a much better team than the last time we played them,” Winebark said.

“Unfortunately I think the girls just started slow and couldn't catch up, however they learned from it and played hard right away at St. Marie's,” she said.
