NIC SOFTBALL: Schmidt nearly perfect in Cardinal sweep
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 months AGO
SPOKANE — It was as close to a perfect day as could be expected.
Two league wins.
And nearly a little bit of history in the first game.
North Idaho College swept Wenatchee Valley 10-1 and 16-6 in Northwest Athletic Conference play on Friday at Whitworth University.
The games were moved to Spokane due to poor field conditions at Memorial Field in Coeur d'Alene.
Kristine Schmidt, a freshman from Coeur d’Alene High, carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before Wenatchee Valley’s Aaliyah Marchand hit a two-out solo home run to break it up. Schmidt struck out the final hitter, her fifth of the game, in the next at-bat.
“She just threw hard, commanded the strike zone and hit her spots,” NIC coach Shay Chapman said. “She had a great day and was just on. Our defense made some great plays behind her, which was really good to see.”
Freshman Kaylee Vieria had two singles and a double in the first game for NIC.
In the nightcap, sophomore Emily Schulhauser hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, then added a three-run shot in the fifth for NIC en route to a sweep. Sophomores Kani Korok and Kennedy Hobson each added a two-run home run for NIC.
“We came out a little slow, but really got the bats going in the third inning,” Chapman said. “It was really our entire lineup, but nice to see Emily have a big day.”
Games against Yakima Valley, scheduled for today, were postponed due to poor field conditions at Memorial Field — also, Whitworth is using its home field for games today. No makeup date was announced.
NIC (19-2, 11-0 NWAC) is scheduled to host the Community Colleges of Spokane on April 13 in a doubleheader at Memorial Field, starting at noon.
Wenatchee Valley, which is second in the East Region, is 15-7, 9-3.
