PREP TENNIS: Sandpoint girls sweep in singles, doubles to down Lakeland
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 8 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 10, 2024 8:50 PM
RATHDRUM — Sandpoint swept in both girls singles and doubles en route to a 9-3 win over Lakeland on Wednesday.
In girls singles, Pepper Rickert, Neva Reseska, and Bella Bailey were all dominant in their wins, not losing any sets. Bailey, who defeated Lakeland’s Jenna Olson in the No. 3 spot, has now extended her winning streak to five matches.
In doubles, it was much of the same for the Bulldogs. Sydney Webb and Aubrey Knowles along with Lily Evans and Mya Vorhies swept the Hawks. Head coach Kent Anderson said Webb and Knowles played with complete confidence and that Evans and Vorhies controlled the net and had great energy.
On the boys side, Jacob Dawson and Caden Martz both came away with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.
“Jacob had to empty the toolbox in the second set to come away with the win,” Anderson said. “He had lots of drop shots and angled volleys in a very crafty victory.”
Martz won his first ever singles victory, stepping up in place of Matthew Norton who was unable to compete Wednesday. Anderson said Martz looked strong and used a consistent serve and dependable ground strokes to wear out his opponent.
In doubles, Ethan Ballard and Nathan Duke were tested, but came away with another victory for the Bulldogs.
In mixed doubles, Elly Tutin and Joey Allen rounded things out with a convincing win in the No. 2 spot. It was Meyer’s first varsity match of all-time. Anderson said the pair played great and that Tutin led the way, playing with supreme confidence as she overpowered her opponents.
Sandpoint faces Post Falls at home Thursday.
