Hayden Meadows Elementary was placed on a safety hold Monday afternoon while the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check involving a person who was last seen near the school.

“There is no immediate danger to the school, but we are being cautious nonetheless,” Stefany Bales, the Coeur d’Alene School District’s community relations director, said in an email to parents Monday.

The welfare check was not related to Hayden Meadows and no threats were made toward the school or anyone else, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The safety hold was put in place due to the proximity to the school.

Students who ride a bus were kept inside the building until their bus pulled up and were then released to board the bus.

Children whose parents pick them up directly from school were kept inside until a parent arrived and then walked outside to the car.

Parents of children who walk home were contacted by staff. Students were kept inside the building until a parent arrived to pick them up.

Multiple deputies remained in the area during the modified release “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the sheriff’s office.
