PREP TENNIS: Sandpoint extends winning streak to four with win over Lake City

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 16, 2024 8:15 PM

COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint swept in girls, boys, and mixed doubles against Lake City to pick up their fourth straight win on Tuesday.

In girls singles, Pepper Rickert and Neva Reseska dominated again. Rickert played the top 5A player in the district and came away with a strong 6-0, 6-1 win.

“The points were impressive … they both brought a lot of tools to the match as they mixed power, touch, and slices very effectively,” head coach Kent Anderson said about Rickert’s match. “Neva was relentless, as always, moving the ball from side-to-side and finishing her points with great racquet head speed.”

In girls doubles, Anderson said Sydney Webb and Aubrey Knowles played their classic style with big serves and down-the-line rips; Webb and Knowles cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory on Tuesday. In the No. 2 spot, Lily Evans and Mya Vorhies continue to impress. The two were down 5-2 in the first set then went on to win 11 straight games to score a 7-5, 6-0 victory.

In boys singles, Jacob Dawson won convincingly in the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-0, to lead the way.

“Jacob played one of his strongest matches of the season using his powerful groundstrokes at just the correct times,” Anderson said. “He was very good at capitalizing on his opponent’s errors.”

Also picking up victories on the day were Matthew Norton in boys singles, Berkeley Cox and Noah Spinney in mixed doubles, and Elly Tutin and Caden Martz, also in mixed doubles. Tutin and Martz won a two-hour, three-set battle to complete the sweep.

“After losing the first set in a tie breaker, they got on a roll and dominated the rest of the way, winning the second set, 6-2 and the third set super-breaker, 10-4,” Anderson said. “Elly’s powerful groundies, big overheads and consistent strong serves matched well with Caden’s speed & natural athleticism.”

Sandpoint (4-1) will compete at the Lewiston Elite Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
