PREP BASEBALL: Williams throws another gem, Sandpoint splits twinbill with Lakeland

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 18, 2024 7:05 PM
RATHDRUM — In the first game, sophomore Dallen Williams pitched six scoreless innings for the Bulldogs to help bring home a 4-1 win as Sandpoint split a doubleheader against Lakeland on Thursday.
In Game 1, leading 1-0 heading into the third inning, Jesse Turner hit an RBI single to center to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to two runs. In the sixth and seventh, Sandpoint scored one run in each frame, getting a sacrifice fly from Lucas Hansen and an RBI single from Williams. Leading 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Sage Medeiros let up a run, but ultimately closed out the game and notched a save for Sandpoint.
Williams, who started the game on the mound for Sandpoint, received the win. Across his six scoreless innings, Williams gave up just one hit and three walks while striking out seven batters. Across 17 ⅔ innings this year, the right-hander now holds a 1.58 ERA.
“Dallen pitched very well today,” head coach Ricky Klontz said. “He was around the zone and our defense worked really well behind him.”
In Game 2, the Hawks struck early, scoring four runs in the second inning, and five in both the third and fourth, eventually winning 14-1. Sandpoint’s lone run came after Mason Little grounded into a fielder’s choice during the top of the fifth.
“The second game ... we’re just going to have to flush that one, reset, and be ready for Saturday,” Klontz said. “We struggled to throw strikes and gave up 12 free passes with a couple errors on top of that — not a good recipe for success.”
Overall, Little and Williams led the Bulldogs at the plate in the doubleheader, both knocking two hits and recording one RBI each. The pair’s batting averages are now both over .300 on the season.
Sandpoint (6-7) hosts Lewiston for a doubleheader Saturday.
