PREP GIRLS LACROSSE: Sandpoint completes season sweep of Gonzaga Prep

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 18, 2024 4:30 PM
SANDPOINT — Rowan Davis scored an around-the-crease goal with three seconds remaining — her fifth goal of the contest to help propel the Bulldogs to a 9-7 win over Gonzaga Prep at War Memorial Field on Wednesday.
After an even first half, Sandpoint pulled away in the third quarter to take a 7-3 lead. The Bullpups, however, went on a 4-1 run in the fourth quarter and trailed by just one with three minutes remaining.
“It was scary there for a while in the fourth quarter,” head coach Nancy Dooley said. “Once we got the ball back, we held on to it for three minutes and then Rowan scored that sweet shot around the crease to seal the deal.”
Dooley said midfielder/defender Grace Gavin, who caused four turnovers, also played a large part in Wednesday’s victory.
“We move her up from midfielder, and then back to defense, and she manages the transition really well. Her and Reina (Montecchi) were playing great, smart lacrosse.”
Dooley mentioned how she was proud of the girls for coming together and working as a team, especially after a tough loss to Richland-Hanford in the girls’ last outing.
“We used the whole team, moved the ball up the field well, and had good passing,” Dooley said. “It feels good coming off the unexpected loss against Richland, who we face Saturday and hope to beat this time. I think we’re ready to right that wrong.”
Sandpoint (5-2) will host Richland-Hanford at War Memorial Field on Saturday.
