PREP SOFTBALL: Cessna shines as Sandpoint falls in twinbill
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 8 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 18, 2024 8:25 PM
SANDPOINT — Peyton Cessna went a combined 5-for-7 with three singles, a double, and a two-run home run to go along with five RBIs as Sandpoint fell 11-1 and 23-12 in a doubleheader against Lakeland on Thursday.
In Game 1, the Bulldogs lone run came from Cessna, who hit an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the third. The Hawks used four-run second and third innings to open things up and eventually seal the victory. Sandpoint’s Cadence Skibitsky, Abi Miller, and Baylie Hindle also notched singles in the first game.
In Game 2, Sandpoint was down 8-0 after the top of the first but continued to battle. In the bottom of the second, Teagan Newsom hit an RBI double, Miller an RBI single, to bring the score to 10-3. Down 16-3 entering the bottom of the third, Cessna, Miller, and Hindle all hit RBI doubles to keep the Bulldogs alive. Later in the fourth and fifth innings, Skibitsky tacked on an RBI single, Bailey Lancaster an RBI double, and Cessna an RBI single and two-run home run before succumbing to the 10-run rule.
In addition to Cessna’s outstanding performance, Skibitsky added four hits, Miller three, over the span of the doubleheader.
"The girls are hitting the ball hard," head coach Leah Platt said. "Abi Miller had an awesome day defensively at second and Teagan Newsom, during her freshman campaign, continues to be a solid contributor at third base as well as at the plate. I am extremely proud of all of them and am proud of the passion they have for the game and the continued fight I see in them. I also love to see the comradery they have with each other — they always have each other's backs."
Sandpoint (3-10) travels to Lewiston for a doubleheader Saturday.
