HAYDEN — About 100 people gathered April 13 at the Hayden Lake Eagles Club for the 2024 Coeur d’Alene Skeet and Trap Club winter league awards banquet.

More than 225 shooters competed this year on 41 teams.

“It was one of the best winter leagues we’ve had,” said Ed Wagner, Coeur d’Alene Skeet and Trap Club president. “All our volunteers stepped up.”

Tom Bosenko, the club’s information officer, described how volunteers tackle the daily work of setting up the fields, loading birds, maintaining machines, removing snow, scoring, cleaning and much more.

“The club could not operate or function if it wasn’t for the work of our dedicated volunteers,” he said.

Dwight Van Horn, a member of the National Rifle Association’s board of directors, shoots almost every weekend at the Coeur d’Alene Skeet and Trap Club. After the winter league went off without a hitch, he said he’s looking ahead to the rest of the year.

“I’m looking forward to good weather and cheap ammo,” he said with a laugh.

Van Horn praised the club for the services it offers the community, especially the local youth teams from area high schools that practice at the club.

“The biggest thing this club does is support youth shooters,” he said.
