MOSES LAKE — The Mavericks picked up wins against West Valley (Yakima), Davis and Eastmont on both the boys and girls side of Thursday’s Columbia Basin Big 9 meet.

Moses Lake’s girls team defeated West Valley 106-43, Davis 120-29 and Eastmont 101-49. The Maverick boys won 98-47 over West Valley, 114-30 over Davis and 75-70 against Eastmont.

“We were nipped and tucked against the Eastmont boys — that was who we were trying to make sure we beat for the boys, and scraped by by five points, so that was really good,” Moses Lake track and field head coach Nicki Weiland said.

Maverick athletes won seven events at the boys meet; senior Ty Rimple (200-meter dash, 22.95 seconds; 400-meter dash, 52.58 seconds), the 4x400-meter relay (3:33.8 minutes, run by Rimple, senior Carter Beus, senior Kyson Thomas and junior Niko Rimple), junior Hunter Blackman (discus, 155 feet, 1.5 inches; javelin, 155 feet, four inches; high jump, six feet, two inches) and junior Malaki Town (triple jump, 38 feet, 4.5 inches).

In the girls meet, Moses Lake athletes won nine events; junior Kaiya Char (100-meter dash, 13.2 seconds; 300-meter hurdles, 47.26 seconds), sophomore Reese Prescott (200-meter dash, 27.64 seconds), all three relays (4x100-meter, 51.43 seconds; 4x200-meter, 1:50.79 minutes; 4x400-meter, 4:26.57 seconds), sophomore Addy Burns (high jump, five feet) and junior Madison Bond (long jump, 16 feet, three inches; triple jump, 34 feet, nine inches).

Among other highlights, Burns placed third in the triple jump after competing in the event for the first time, posting a jump of 32 feet, 3.5 inches.

“She tried the triple jump for the first time (Thursday) night, and she placed,” Weiland said.

In the pole vault, Moses Lake senior Kylan Chivers took second with a height of 12 feet, six inches. Sophomore Joseph Seiler and junior Caleb Donovan both reached 11 feet, taking fourth and fifth at the meet.

“They really helped score the points for our team, too,” Weiland said.

Moses Lake swept the top four placings of the girls 100-meter dash and the top three of the 200-meter dash on Thursday; Char won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.2 seconds, while Prescott won the 200-meter dash, running a time of 27.64 seconds.

“They’re striving to beat each other; they want to be the top dog on the team,” Weiland said. “It makes them work hard in practice. Coach (Jennifer Carpenter) is an excellent sprint coach for both the boys and girls, and they work hard because they know it’s going to come out in their performance.”

In the boys distance runs, Niko Rimple took third in the 800-meter run; sophomore Liam O’Shea, sophomore Sean Brumet and junior Jaciel Valdez took fourth through sixth in the 1,600-meter run; junior Angel Verduzco and junior Mitchell West took fourth and fifth in the 3,200-meter run.

“The distancers came on to help tighten that point spread, so we ended up winning by five against Eastmont,” Weiland said.

Weiland described Blackman as being “multi-talented.” The junior, who holds 4A’s furthest discus attempt as of Friday (167 feet, one inch), won Thursday’s high jump event with a height of six feet, two inches.

“Most people are shocked when they see a thrower go and do the high jump: the guys are all like, ‘What are you doing over here?’” Weiland said. “Then after he jumped, they go, ‘Oh, that’s why you’re over here.’

The Moses Lake boys can secure a CBBN title with a win against Eisenhower at Thursday’s meet.

“It’s just everybody working together as a team,” Weiland said. “Not being selfish, and saying ‘I can step up and I can do that for our team.’”

Twenty-three Moses Lake athletes were honored at the team’s senior ceremony ahead of Thursday’s meet. Weiland said 11 of the seniors have been four-year members of the track and field team.

“They’re a good family, they bond really well,” Weiland said.
