PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint baseball, softball fall in doubleheaders against Moscow

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 29, 2024 8:00 PM

SOFTBALL

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint’s Cadence Skibitsky had three hits, Peyton Cessna, Kaylee McCown, and Teagan Newsom two each, as the Bulldogs fell to Moscow 16-5 and 8-0 at War Memorial Field on Monday.

In the first game, Cessna had an RBI single in the first and fourth innings, Bailey Lancaster an RBI single in the third for Sandpoint. Skibitsky was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a single, and two runs scored.

In the second game, Teagan Newsom led the Bulldogs, going 2-for-2 with a double and a single. Kaylee McCown also notched a single. On the mound, Ainsley Hull struck out five batters over 5 ⅓ innings for Sandpoint.

"Although the score didn't go our way, the girls were fighters today," head coach Leah Platt said. "The outfield worked hard — Baylie Hindle, Cadence Skibitsky, and Emma Kohal all had great catches. Ainsley Hull went the distance on the mound for two games and showed some real grit and determination. Moscow is a tough team."

Platt also noted that Lancaster worked hard behind the plate, keeping runners on their toes, that Newsom had some great defensive plays at third, and that McCown had some great digs at first base.

Sandpoint (3-19) will close out the regular season at Lakeland on Saturday.

Moscow, however, responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning and with three more in the sixth, eventually taking the victory. In the second game, the Bears used 12-run first and second innings to pull away early. Sandpoint was able to score two in both the third and fourth thanks to RBI singles from Parker Reichart and Finn Mellander. Gavin Day went 2-for-2 with a double and single in the contest.
