TRAVEL SOFTBALL: The North 16U upends top seed at Portland Tourney
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 1 week AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | August 7, 2024 1:00 AM
The North 16U travel softball team, who were the bottom-seed at the August DeMarini Classic held Aug. 3-4 at the Owens Sports Complex in Portland, Ore., took down the top-seeded CSC Ignite of Salem, Ore., and eventually settled for a fourth place finish at one of the most competitive tournaments in the West.
In pool play on Saturday, The North fell to the Mound Time 14U of Hillsboro, Ore. (6-1), the NW Thunder 14U of Battleground, Wash. (12-8) and the NW Mayhem 18U of Milwaukie, Ore. (11-3). In the loss to Mound Time, Leslie Gravier (Troy, Mont.) was 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, and two runs scored. Against the NW Thunder, Teagan Newsom (Sandpoint) was 2-for-3 with two singles, a run scored, and one RBI. Against the NW Mayhem, Baylie Hindle (Sandpoint) led the way with an RBI single.
With the losses, The North knew they would have to face the CSC Ignite, who finished pool play 2-1 and with a 22-6 run differential, first thing Sunday.
They didn’t shy away from the challenge.
Bailey Lancaster (Sandpoint) and Abi Miller (Sandpoint) led the charge with two hits each and The North came away with a 10-5 upset win. Sarah Koskela (Thompson Falls, Mont.) also had multiple hits in the win and pitched a phenomenal game on the mound, giving up four hits, one walk and no earned runs while striking out three batters.
After the win, The North lost again to Mound Time, who took second place overall, 11-5. In the third-fourth place match, The North was downed by the Impulse Fastpitch 16U of Camas, Wash., 10-0.
Overall, Newsom, a rising sophomore at Sandpoint High, was the only player to have a hit in all six contests for The North. She went a combined 8-for-18 with six singles, two doubles, two RBIs and four runs scored.
The North was the only team from Idaho at the tournament.
