PREP GOLF: Tuinstra, Sandpoint girls impressive in season opener

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | August 14, 2024 7:30 PM

GIRLS

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — Senior Alexa Tuinstra shot an impressive two-over-par 74, good enough for medalist honors, and the Sandpoint High girls' golf team won their season-opening tourney at the MeadowWood Golf Course on Wednesday.

The Lady Bulldogs swept the top four finishes. Senior Taylor Mire carded a 77, senior Raegan Samuels an 83, and senior Demi Driggs an 88 for a total score of 322. Claire Loutzenhiser, Sandpoint’s fifth golfer, finished with an 89, which beat out every other golfer who wasn’t a Lady Bulldog.

“Alexa and Taylor played really well today,” head coach Mike Deprez. “Taylor shot a 36 on the front and a 41 on the back, where everyone had a bad hole or two — nothing to get me worried. Alexa did the total opposite; she shot a 40 and then absolutely lit it up with a 34 on the backside. She was absolutely phenomenal.”

Deprez said he was very content and happy with how the Lady Bulldogs played, especially considering all of their scores were in the 80’s and 70’s.

“All five of their fundamentals are in really good shape right now,” coach Deprez said.

BOYS

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — Bode Eacret opened up his sophomore season with a solid nine-over-par 79 to lead Sandpoint High to a fourth place team finish in their season-opening tourney held Wednesday at the Liberty Lake Golf Course.

“It’s been awhile since we had anyone in the 70’s, so I’m totally stoked for Bode,” coach Deprez said.

Junior Logan Roos carded an 85, junior Cooper Zimmerman an 89, and junior Micah Young a 91 to round out the Bulldogs’ top four. Rajah Brown shot a 102 in the No. 5 spot.

“Micah and Cooper both had two holes that got away from them, but they were otherwise fine,” Deprez said. “Logan had a really strong finish with a birdie on the last hole; his last three holes were great, so I’m very happy with that. Rajah shot the ball better than his score indicates; it was more so decisions for him rather than mechanics.”

Sandpoint will be back in action on Tuesday at The Highlands Golf Course in Post Falls.
