COEUR d’ALENE — On Site For Seniors is throwing a senior prom next month, but since most of its clients won’t be able to make it, it brought the party to them Friday.

“We wanted them to experience what it will be like,” said Rhonda Story, manager of the adult day center.

They decorated with balloons, livened things up with music and vocals by an animated Patricia Maurer, mixed in some sandwiches and chips, and voila, they had a homecoming dance.

Most guests sat quietly and listened, but others got up and danced. One man tapped on a table with his hands as if playing the drums. A few ladies wore gowns donated by Coeur Community Closet and had their hair done up in curls.

Bill Muck, executive director of On Site For Seniors, said when their clients heard about the senior prom scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Best Western Plus Coeur d’Alene Inn, they said they would love to attend. Since they can’t, the homecoming gave them a chance to show off their moves Friday.

“This is so exciting for them,” Muck said. “They don’t get a chance to dance often, so this is an opportunity for them to really have fun.”

The senior prom fundraiser will include an elegant dinner and dance. Suits, ties and evening gowns will be the rule, and there will be silent auctions and music by the Coeur d’Alene Big Band.

The public is welcome. Tickets are $75.

“It's going to be just a wonderful evening,” Muck said.

Even if a family saved $25,000, they would still be $19,000 short of the down payment needed to buy a $550,000 home, which is the median price in Kootenai County. It’s estimated that only about 20% of area households can afford to buy a home.
