SANDPOINT — Bonner County commissioners met Tuesday to work through a short agenda. The officials voted unanimously to approve a five-year contract with Waste Management of Idaho for rural solid waste collection and disposal.
Under the agreement, Bonner County will pay the contractor $47,735 per month, with the additional per-ton fees of $11.01 for transfer station operation and $95.78 for transportation and disposal.
Solid Waste Director Bob Howard told the commissioners that the new contract, which will go into effect Oct. 1, is 2.72% higher in cost than the existing agreement.
The commissioners also heard from Dave Schuck, airports manager for the Bonner County Airport Advisory Board.
Schuck reported that the terms of three members of the board, one of whom being Schuck, had expired; all three wished to be reappointed for an additional three-year term. The commissioners voted unanimously to extend their service.
The commissioners also approved two confidential invoices from Sheriff Daryl Wheeler totaling $79,840.
The BOCC’s next regular meeting will take place at the Bonner County Administration Building, 1500 U.S. 2, at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27.

The two-building, 88-unit downtown project — brought forth by the developer as “Farmin Flats” — will move forward as long as long as the developer complies with conditions set forth by the commissioners and city staff, which include requirements to designate a dedicated vehicle loading zone at each of the proposed buildings and repave the alleyway south of south of the buildings if city staff deem it necessary.

Fire chief outlines plan forward, challenges ahead after budget expansion proposals fall short
Sagle, Westside and Northside fire districts, which protect the areas immediately to the south, west and north of Sandpoint, each proposed a levy override that would permanently increase their budgets through annual payments made by property owners. All three measures failed to reach 50% support and fell well short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass. Armstrong — who heads all three districts — outlined the changes that will result in a public statement Wednesday.
