PREP SOCCER: Lakeland notches first win over Coeur d'Alene since 2003

RATHDRUM — It’s been a while.

But that didn’t stop Lakeland from making a little girls soccer history in its season opener at Sunrise Rotary Field.

Junior Natalee Rose scored in the 67th minute on an assist from sophomore Aspen Liddiard for the Hawks, who beat the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 1-0 in an Inland Empire League match, the first win by Lakeland over Coeur d’Alene since Sept. 4, 2003.

“We’ve never been close to beating them,” said fourth-year Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge. “It was the entire team. Each person that stepped on the field did their part. Our midfield was super strong and our offense was able to finish. All of their hard work is paying off.”

Junior Ruby McIntosh had eight saves for Lakeland, which travels to Post Falls on Thursday.

“Ruby really had some great saves that kept us in the game,” Rogge said. “Our defense really stepped up to play today. Coeur d’Alene is a great team and we had something to prove, and the girls stepped up.”

Coeur d’Alene hosts Lewiston on Thursday.

“Lakeland played a great game and beat us in every aspect of the game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “They showed up ready to play and we didn’t. Lakeland played their hearts out and our girls have to be ready to battle each day.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Chloe Burkholder stepped up when called upon in Saturday’s draw with Sandpoint.

So, for an encore, she did it again in the home opener.

Burkholder, a forward, recorded a hat trick for the Timberwolves in an Inland Empire League opener over the Bengals at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex in a rematch of last year’s 5A Region 1 championship match won by the Timberwolves in Lewiston.

“Chloe played really well on Saturday in Sandpoint and again today,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “She’s been really assertive on the front line and you can’t ask for more out of a player. She had some great opportunities against Sandpoint, but Chloe put the ball in the back of the net today.”

Lake City (1-0-1, 1-0 IEL) travels to Moscow on Thursday.

Lewiston (1-2), now in the 5A classification), visits Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

Grangeville is 0-2, 0-1.

COEUR d’ALENE — Ronan Sternberg had been battling some leg injury problems last week, and first-year coach Robbie Harmelink wasn’t quite sure what he’d get out of the senior when the Vikings opened the season under the lights at Viking Field.

As it turned out, plenty.

Sternberg recorded a hat trick for the Vikings against the Hawks in the Inland Empire League opener for both schools.

“Ronan was very lively tonight,” Harmelink said. “He was finding himself in the right pocket and in the right moment. It was really great to see.”

Senior Nate Simon had a goal and two assists for Coeur d’Alene (1-0-0), which travels to Lewiston on Thursday.

Lakeland (0-2) hosts Post Falls on Thursday.
