PREP BASKETBALL: Caven, Howard stuff stat sheet in Wampus Cat season opener
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 4 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 3, 2024 9:30 PM

CLARK FORK — In a fast-paced affair at Clark Fork High, junior Westin Caven had 18 points and teetered on the line of a quadruple-double, junior Owen Howard a double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds, as the Wampus Cats fell to Saints 75-59 in a non-league matchup and the season opener for both schools on Tuesday.
Howard, who was complimented by Clark Fork High assistant coach Kyler Rice for his drop-step and got the Wampus Cats back in the game numerous times, added five blocks and three assists to the stat sheet in addition to his double-double. Caven added seven rebounds, nine assists, eight steals and two blocks in what was one of the most impressive games by a Clark Fork player in recent history.
"I think we did really well for only having six guys," Clark Fork High head coach Stillman Berkley said. "We are even dealing with a couple of ankle injuries, and those guys only had a couple minutes to sit out. Westin had an awesome game, he was working so hard that both of his calves cramped up. He really showed some grit tonight."
Freshman Jason Mayorga added seven points and six rebounds, sophomore Buddy Adams four points and four rebounds and junior Peyton Stevens three points for Clark Fork (0-1), which travels to Genesis Prep on Thursday.

Laybourne, Mire help Lady Bulldogs to first league win
Sandpoint 40, Moscow 32
MOSCOW — In a grinder at the Bear Den, the Lady Bulldogs, led by two third quarter 3-pointers from senior Chloe Laybourne, improved their winning streak to three games after defeating the Lady Bears 40-32 in their 5A Inland Empire League opener on Tuesday.
"They did a good job of hurrying us up early on and we were struggling to get into our offense," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "After halftime, it was back-and-forth before Chloe hit two 3-pointers that really got us going."
Moscow eventually clawed their way back into the contest, leading 31-30 in the fourth, but the Lady Bulldogs closed out the game on a 10-1 run to seal the deal.
"Jordyn (Tomco) did a good job of attacking Moscow's defense near the end of the game," coach Love said. "She had some big drives that helped us pull away at the very end. I think ultimately is was a huge learning experience for us... this group is new and it's never easy to play at Moscow."
Sophomores Livia Driggs and Jordyn Tomco had six points, senior Demi Driggs five for Sandpoint (3-0), which travels to Timberlake on Thursday.
