PREP BASKETBALL: Priest River girls down Clark Fork for fourth straight win
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 5, 2024 9:20 PM

CLARK FORK — Senior Desi Humphrey continued her stellar season Thursday at Clark Fork High, scoring a game-high 20 points and leading the Lady Spartans to their fourth straight win with a 50-23 non-league victory over the Lady Cats.
Priest River got out to an early 8-0 lead and used a balanced scoring attack to take a 28-6 lead heading into halftime. In the third, Clark Fork, led by four points each from sophomore Nora-Jean Hoy and senior Jamie Herrick, trimmed the lead a bit before the Lady Spartans eventually pulled away even further.
Humphrey, who had 12 of her 20 points and two 3-pointers in the third, added eight rebounds, five steals and four blocks to the stat sheet while senior Lizzie McCracken added 10 points and a game-high six assists.
Junior Aleigha Jensen had eight points and nine rebounds, senior Paityn Yount five points and seven steals, senior Haley Braae five points and three steals, freshman McKinley Burgess-Duquette two points and six rebounds off the bench for Priest River (4-0), which travels to Genesis Prep on Dec. 12.

For Clark Fork (0-4), which will play host to Wallace on Tuesday, junior Kathi Rupp had four points and 11 rebounds, junior Priscilla Mayorga two points and nine rebounds, freshman Keira Gannon five points and three steals while junior Piper Scarlett and senior Hannah Thompson added two points each.

SPIRIT LAKE — The Lady Bulldogs kept it close through three quarters, but it was the host Lady Tigers who pulled out a 55-35 non-league win on Thursday at Timberlake High.
Sophomore Brecken Mire led Sandpoint, which trailed by just six points heading into the fourth quarter, with 14 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Fellow sophomore Jordyn Tomco also reached double-figures, scoring 12 and hauling in four rebounds.
"Diana (Nelson) did a really good job in the post — we had a hard time guarding her," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "We did a good job in the first half, defensively. They're a really well-coached team and we're able to figure out sets that gave us some problems."
Love said what ultimately held his team back in the loss was simply... regularly putting the ball in the basket. Sandpoint shot roughly 23 percent from the field on the night.
"We'll learn from this and we knew there were going to be some bumps in the road this season," coach Love said. "I know the girls are excited to get back in the gym and work on the things we need to correct."
Senior Demi Driggs added six points and seven rebounds, sophomore Livia Driggs three points and two steals, sophomore Carly Laybourne five rebounds for Sandpoint (3-1), which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Genesis Prep 74, Clark Fork 37
POST FALLS — Only playing with five healthy players, junior Owen Howard posted his second double-double of the season for the visiting Wampus Cats, which fell 74-37 to the host Jaguars in a 2A Scenic Idaho Conference matchup on Thursday at The Courts at Real Life.
Howard posted another huge stat line, scoring 12 points and recording 13 rebounds and four blocks. Sophomore Mateo Cruz, playing in his first game of the season, scored 16 points, hit three 3-pointers, and added seven rebounds for Clark Fork. Junior Westin Caven had seven points, five assists and four steals.
Clark Fork High head coach Stillman Berkley said his team was in it during the first half, but eventually fell off with a lot of turnovers.
"We tried to keep the tempo low enough to get all five players through the game," coach Berkley said. "Genesis Prep shot well outside and got us into foul trouble early. It was a rough game for the guys; the energy wasn't there like the last game. Lots to learn from this loss."
Junior Peyton Stevens added two points, sophomore Buddy Adams two steals for Clark Fork (0-2), which hosts Noxon on Dec. 12.
