PREP BASKETBALL: Rupp hits five 3-pointers in first quarter to pace Viking romp

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Carter Rupp hit 6 of 8 from the 3-point line, five coming in the first quarter, and scored 29 points for Coeur d’Alene, which opened the season with a 91-50 win over the University Titans of Spokane Valley at Viking Court on Saturday. 

“Offensively, we’ve got a lot of weapons,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “Maybe more than last year. From a coaching standpoint, if they’re not going to cover Carter, we’re going to exploit that until they make a change. Defensively, I was happy to see our three-quarter press look good as well. We knew we could score, but it was good to see the defensive effort we put out there as well.” 

Kai Wheeler added 17 and Caden Symons 14 points for Coeur d’Alene, which travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.

“It was a good game for us,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “West Valley, as a team, they’re more similar to Mt. Spokane and were a little bigger than us across the board. But our guys did a good job of making them play faster than they wanted to. Each game we’ve played has taught us that we’ve got to be more sound and take care of our responsibility.” 

Cobe Cameron had 13 points and four assists for Post Falls (1-2), which travels to North Central on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM – The host Hawks led 32-24 at halftime, but were outscored 33-18 in the second half in the nonleague loss to the Scotties of Rockford, Wash., at Hawk Court. 

Brayden Carrel had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Lakeland (0-2). 

“We haven’t been able to execute offensively, and that’s been our Achilles heel the past two games,” first-year Lakeland coach Caleb De Fabiis said.  

The Hawks had 19 turnovers. 

“We just have to trust the process and continue to get better each and every day,” De Fabiis said. “Our best basketball is down the road and that is totally fine.”

Max Simpson added 13 points for Timberlake (2-1), who hit 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to expand a five-point lead with 4 minutes left. 

“The kids just kept their composure,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “We just talked about playing good team defense, and played good help defense.” 

Kellogg coach Mike Martin was hired by LaFountaine when he was athletic director at Kellogg. 

Cayden Honnerlaw led Kellogg (1-2) with nine points.
