MERIDIAN — Kai Wheeler had 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, and also grabbed 11 rebounds as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings held off the Madison Bobcats of Rexburg 62-56 in a matchup of top-three teams in 6A in the opening game of the Pro Image Holiday Classic at Owyhee High.
Carter Rupp scored 20 points for third-ranked Coeur d’Alene, which outrebounded second-ranked Madison 47-29.
“From a size and physicality standpoint, we outrebounded them really well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “We were taking high-percentage shots, but they’re good for a reason. They made a run in the second half, but it was good to see our guys remain composed and fight through it.”
Caden Symons had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Coeur d’Alene (3-0), which faces Sheldon (Calif.) in a semifinal game tonight. Sheldon beat Ridgevue in a quarterfinal game 69-54.
Boise State signee Nash Humpherys scored 33 points for Madison (2-1), which faces Ridgevue in a consolation game.

MERIDIAN — Reese Strawn had his senior moment on Thursday at Owyhee High.
With the game tied at 50-50, Strawn hit a go-ahead jumper with 17 seconds left, then converted a pair of free-throws late at the Timberwolves beat the Skyhawks of Beaverton, Ore., in the opening round of the Pro Image Holiday Classic.
“We ran a set that got a decent look and didn’t make it,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “Josh (Watson) got the rebound and kicked it out to Reese. He gave me a look to just let him go, and he hit a shot with 17 seconds left. They went down, got a look and missed and Reese closed out the game.”
Sophomore Jordan Carlson scored 21 points, Strawn 18 for Lake City (5-1), which faces host Owyhee in the semifinals tonight.
Alonzo Hoff scored 15 points for Beaverton (2-1), which faces Middleton in a consolation game today.

LIBERTY LAKE — Jaxon Lysne scored a game-high 17 points for the Trojans, who outscored the Falcons 18-4 in the second quarter to pull away for the noneleague win.
“We did a really good job on the defensive end,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “We kept the ball out of the lane and contested a lot of their shots. I was really, really proud of the guys. We’d lost three games by a combined 11 points, but the kids kept believing and came in ready to go. All 10 of them contributed tonight defensively and showed a lot of character. I’m proud of each one of them.”
Connor Carver scored 15 points, Tyras Blake 10 points for Post Falls (2-3), which hosts Gonzaga Prep tonight.

"It was a good game and we played well," Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. "We did a good job of being aggressive and getting to the hoop."
Lakeside was 19 of 30 from the free-throw line.
"I'm proud of the girls," Dohrman said. "They played hard and it was good for us overall."
Tylah Lampert added 10 points for Lakeside (4-2), which plays host to Wallace on Tuesday in Scenic Idaho Conference play.
