POST FALLS — Christmas had come a little early for residents at the Idaho State Veterans Home.

“We want to make the holiday as special for our veterans as we can,” said activities and volunteer coordinator Kady Aamot.

Saturday’s Christmas party included all the classics: Christmas music, hot drinks and gifts for each resident.

The party was made possible by the work of American Legion Riders Post 25, which started fundraising earlier this year to ensure each veteran would get a gift that was right for them.

“We fundraised all summer to be able to do this,” said Legion Riders member Jason Morris. “It’s amazing to get up here and hear their stories.”

This is the second year the St. Maries-based group has stepped up to bring holiday cheer to the veterans.

“We’re always happy to do it. It’s very humbling,” said Legion Riders Post 25 vice president Bill Byes. “We’re free because of these guys.”

For Legion Riders member Phyllis Hill, Saturday was also about giving back in honor of her late husband, Gary.

“This feels good,” Hill said, tears glittering in her eyes. “It’s still pretty emotional.”

Aamot and the Veterans Home staff were blown away by the support they’ve received from the Legion Riders and the larger community.

“There’s been such amazing community involvement,” Aamot told The Press. “They have blessed us, above and beyond.”
