The Valkyries swim team started their season Saturday in Kalispell with new head coach Chad Cummins.
“I am excited for the season,” Cummins said. “We are a pretty young team, so I think there is lots of nervousness and excitement all around.”
Cummins coached summer club swimming for all ages in the past and most recently coached Bigfork Soccer Club’s U11 team.
Nine girls make up the team, with four returning. Senior swimmers are Maci Pickens and Chanelle Marchinek. Alexandra Cash and Emma Benn both swam as eighth graders last year.
“We are trying out some different events. Seems most of the girls like to do freestyle. But we'll be mixing it up over the season to try other options and accommodate for some early season injuries,” Cummins said.
The team scored nine points in the Kalispell December Invitational, leaving room for improvement.
“We've got a fun group of girls. They have really positive attitudes, and we are all looking forward to the season ahead!” Cummins said.
Up next, the swimmers will compete at Mission Valley Aquatic Center Saturday, Dec. 21 at 12 p.m.
